Solar for Petrol Pumps: Canopy, Backup and Safety
Short answer
Solar for petrol pumps works well because stations have large daytime loads, wide canopies and roofs, and a real need for backup when the grid fails. Panels on the forecourt canopy, shop and service-bay roofs cut daytime grid use, while a battery or generator covers the night. The non-negotiable part is safety: all inverters, batteries and junction boxes stay outside the fuel hazardous areas, and the installation follows the outlet's licensing and safety rules.
This guide is for owners and dealers of petrol pumps, filling stations and service areas across Punjab.
The petrol pump load profile
A petrol pump never really sleeps. Typical loads include:
- Fuel dispensers and their electronics.
- Canopy and forecourt lighting, often running all night.
- Tuck shop: fridges, freezers, display chillers and lighting.
- Air compressor for tyres, and car wash pumps where present.
- Office, POS, CCTV and network equipment.
- Cooling in the shop and office.
Many stations run 24 hours. Daytime load is usually high (cooling, chillers, compressors, car wash), and night load is lower but steady (lighting, dispensers, fridges, CCTV). That shape matters for sizing.

What solar can and cannot cover
Solar supplies the daytime load directly. Under net billing, used on site, each unit is worth your full tariff; exported units earn a lower rate. See our net metering and net billing guide.
At night, the station needs grid power, a battery or a generator. So the design question is how to split the night and outage load between them:
| Option | How it works at a petrol pump | When it suits |
|---|---|---|
| On-grid solar | Solar by day, grid at night; solar stops during outages | Stable grid, generator already covers outages |
| Hybrid solar with battery | Battery carries dispensers, lighting and POS through outages and part of the night | Frequent outages; want sales to continue without starting the generator |
| Hybrid with generator integration | Solar shares load with the generator during long outages through a controller | Stations with an existing generator and long outages |
Our guide to hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid explains the choice. For the generator side, see solar and generator hybrid systems.
Backup that keeps sales going
When the grid drops, dispensers and POS stop, and so do sales. A battery sized for the dispensers, POS, CCTV and essential lighting can keep the station trading through short outages and bridge the gap while a generator starts. It is usually more efficient to back up these essential circuits than the whole station. Our BESS guide explains how to judge a battery's size and job.
Canopy and roof installations
The forecourt canopy is often the largest flat surface on site. Solar on the canopy:
- uses space that is otherwise idle;
- adds shade, and can reduce heat on the canopy deck.
But a canopy was designed to carry its own roof sheeting, lighting and signage, not necessarily the extra load of panels and their structure under wind.
- Check the canopy structure first. An engineer must assess the steel frame, columns and foundations for the extra weight and for wind uplift.
- Use a designed mounting system. Clamps and rails fixed to the canopy steel, never loose ballast on canopy sheeting.
- Plan for wind and storms. Canopies are exposed and catch wind from below. See our guide to wind, storms and lightning.
- Use other roofs too. The shop, office, service bay and car wash roofs are often easier to use than the canopy.
- Consider a separate elevated structure in a safe part of the plot, away from fuel areas, if the canopy is not suitable. See L2, L3 and elevated structures.
Solar Works Pakistan designs structures in-house and our own team fabricates and assembles them on site, with a 3-year structure warranty.
Safety around fuel: hazardous areas
This is the most important section for a petrol pump.
Around dispensers, tank fill points, vent pipes and tank manholes, petrol vapour can be present. These spaces are classified as hazardous areas. Electrical equipment that can produce a spark or a hot surface must not be installed in them unless it is specifically rated for that zone.
In Pakistan, retail outlets work under OGRA's technical standards for petroleum retail outlets, which cover electrical installations and hazardous locations, and the Department of Explosives requires approval for constructing and operating petrol pumps.
Practical rules we follow in design:
- Inverters, batteries, combiner boxes and DBs stay outside hazardous areas, in a ventilated room or enclosure away from the forecourt.
- No DC junction boxes, isolators or connectors inside or above the dispenser zones.
- Cable routes are planned to avoid tank areas and vent pipes, in proper conduit or trays.
- Earthing and bonding of the structure and equipment are designed for the site, with surge protection. See solar earthing and surge protection.
- Emergency shutdown. The station's emergency stop should also isolate the solar AC output, and the DC side should have clearly labelled isolation points outside the forecourt. Correct breakers and isolators are covered in MCB, MCCB and RCCB for solar.
- Battery choice and location consider fire safety; lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the common choice for commercial storage, installed in a separate ventilated space.
- Work permits on site. No hot work near fuel areas, and work planned with the station manager.
All tests required for safe commissioning are completed before handover.
How to size a petrol pump system
- Collect 12 months of electricity bills.
- List loads and which run 24 hours: dispensers, lighting, chillers, compressor, car wash, cooling.
- Note outage patterns and the generator's rating and running hours.
- Mark which circuits must stay on during outages.
- Check canopy and roof areas, and where equipment can sit safely.
For example, if a station uses about 150 kWh on a typical day, with roughly 100 kWh of that in daylight hours, solar can be sized towards the daytime share, and a battery or generator considered for the rest. These are round illustrative numbers only; your bills and survey give the real figures.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to install solar panels at a petrol pump?
Yes, when the design keeps all electrical equipment out of the fuel hazardous areas and follows the outlet's safety rules. Inverters, batteries and junction boxes go in a separate ventilated space away from dispensers, tanks and vents.
Can solar panels go on the petrol pump canopy?
Often, but only after an engineer checks the canopy frame and foundations for the extra weight and wind uplift. If the canopy is not suitable, shop roofs or a separate elevated structure can be used.
Can solar run a petrol pump at night?
Not directly. Solar covers the daytime load. At night the station uses grid power, a battery or a generator. A battery can carry essential loads such as dispensers, POS and lighting through outages and part of the night.
Do I need approval to add solar at a petrol pump?
Petrol pumps operate under OGRA standards and Department of Explosives approvals, and your oil marketing company may have its own rules. Check with them before installing. Net billing also needs your DISCO's approval if you want to export.
Will dispensers keep working during load-shedding with solar?
Only if the system includes a battery or generator backup for those circuits. On-grid solar alone switches off when the grid fails.
Does solar work for CNG stations too?
The same principles apply, but CNG compressors are large loads and gas areas have their own hazardous-area rules. The design must be assessed for that specific site.
