Solar panel verification: how to check a panel is genuine
Last updated:
Solar panel verification means taking the serial number from the back label and checking it on the manufacturer's own website before you pay. Every major brand sold in Pakistan has an official check, and each takes about a minute per panel.
Fake, relabelled and B-grade solar plates are common here because the most popular models sell in huge numbers. Check every panel in a delivery, not one sample.
Solar panel serial number check: the 5-minute method
These five steps work for any brand. Do them before payment, while the panels are still in their boxes.
- Read the serial number. It is printed with a barcode on the label on the back of the panel.
- Match the codes. On most models a matching barcode is sealed under the front glass. It must match the back label and the box.
- Verify on the brand's official page. Use the links in the table below. Type the address yourself; never use a link or app the seller sends you.
- Compare with the datasheet. Model code, wattage, size and weight must match the official datasheet for that model.
- Ask for the flash test data and a proper invoice. The invoice should show brand, model, wattage, quantity and every serial number.
Official solar panel verification by brand
Each brand runs its own check. Open the official page, enter the code from the panel and compare the result with the label.
| Brand | Where to verify | What you enter | Full guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jinko | cs.jinkosolar.com (authenticity) or the Jinko Flash Track app | Serial number | Jinko verification |
For AIKO, Cora Dawn and Jasco panels, verify the serial number through the brand's official support channel. AIKO ABC panels and the LONGi Hi-MO X10 use back-contact cells, so they have no busbars (the thin silver lines) on the front. A "back-contact" panel with front busbars is not what its label says.
How to check an original solar panel by eye
A physical check catches many fakes before you even go online. Look at these six things on every panel.
- Size and weight: compare with the datasheet. A 585 watt N-type panel is about 2278 × 1134 mm; a noticeably smaller panel cannot produce the same power.
- Label quality: spelling mistakes, mixed fonts, uneven printing or a label stuck over another label are warning signs.
- Junction box and cables: the box on the back, its cable length and the MC4 connectors should match the datasheet.
- Frame: genuine frames are clean and evenly cut, with drainage holes. Look for re-drilled holes or bent corners.
- Cells and glass: cells should be evenly coloured, with no cracks, dark "snail trail" lines or bubbles inside the panel.
- Bifacial panels: a bifacial (double-glass) panel has glass on the back, not a white plastic sheet.
Signs of fake or B-grade solar panels in Pakistan
One warning sign is a reason to recheck. Two or more are a reason not to buy.
| Warning sign | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Official page shows no record | Fake, relabelled, or a typing error (recheck first) |
| Result shows a different model or wattage | Relabelled panel |
| Grade is not A, but sold at A-grade price | Downgraded panel |
| Canadian Solar result shows a ship-to country other than Pakistan | Grey import; the manufacturer warranty may not apply here |
| Same serial number on two panels | Copied label |
| Seller avoids showing serials before payment | Mixed genuine and fake stock |
| Seller sends their own "verify here" link or app | Fake verification page |
| Price well below today's market rate | Factory reject, used panel or fake |
| No invoice, or invoice without model and serials | No warranty support |
B-grade solar panels are not always fake. They are factory seconds with cosmetic or performance defects, and they should be sold as B-grade at a lower price, never as A-grade.
After you verify: keep the records
Save a screenshot of each verification result and keep it with your invoice. A warranty claim needs the serial number and proof of purchase, and the screenshot shows the panel was genuine on the day you bought it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if a solar panel is original?
Take the serial number from the back label and check it on the brand's official verification page. Then match the model, wattage and size with the official datasheet.
Is a QR code on the panel enough to prove it is genuine?
No. A QR sticker can be printed for any panel and can point to any website. Only a check you open yourself on the manufacturer's own website or app counts.
Where is the serial number on a solar panel?
On the barcode label on the back of the panel. Most models also have a matching barcode sealed under the front glass.
What are Tier 1 solar panels?
Tier 1 is a BloombergNEF list of manufacturers with bankable, large-scale production. It rates the company, not each panel, so you still need to verify the serial number.
Are B-grade solar panels fake?
Not always. B-grade panels are genuine factory seconds with defects; the problem is when they are sold at an A-grade price.
Can I verify panels after installation?
Yes, through the barcode under the front glass, but it is much easier before installation. Ask for the serial list before the panels go on the roof.
Does Solar Works Pakistan help customers verify panels?
Yes. We show you each panel's serial number before you pay, and every invoice lists the serial numbers, so you can verify each one yourself with the brand.
