L2 vs L3 vs Elevated Solar Structures: Which Roof Needs Which
Short answer
A low L2 or L3 solar structure suits most flat, open rooftops where nothing else needs the space underneath. An elevated solar structure is the better choice when you need to use the roof below, keep water tanks and walkways clear, or mount panels over a shed, car park or factory roof. The right answer depends on your roof, wind exposure, panel size and how you use the space, so it should be settled at the site survey, not from a catalogue.
What "L2", "L3", "P1" and "P2" actually mean
These are trade names used in Pakistan, not engineering standards. In our projects they describe how the panels sit on each frame:
| Name | Meaning | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| L2 | 2 panels in landscape (long side horizontal) per frame | Flat roofs; low, compact rows |
| L3 | 3 panels in landscape per frame | Larger flat roofs; fewer legs per kW |
| P1 | 1 panel in portrait (long side vertical) per frame | Narrow roofs and edges |
| P2 | 2 panels in portrait per frame | Longer rows on open roofs |
Structure types we design and build

Ground-mounted
Farms and tubewells
Sloped / tin roof

Every structure type we design and build
- L2, L3, P1 and P2 frames for flat roofs
- Elevated structures, so the roof stays usable underneath, including versions with a walkway or staircase
- Car-parking structures (carports)
- Ground-mounted structures for farms and tubewells
- Tin and sloped-roof rail mounts, east-west low-tilt layouts and single-post (mono-pole) structures
We build in hot-dip galvanised steel or with aluminium rails. Any height is possible: our in-house design team designs every structure for its site, roof and wind load, and we build them with pride. Our structures carry a 3-year structure warranty.
When a low L2 or L3 solar structure makes sense
A low frame is usually the simpler and lower-cost option. It works well when:
- the roof is flat, strong and has a clear area facing south;
- you do not need the space under the panels for anything else;
- there is no tall water tank, stair room or neighbouring building shading the array;
- the roof is not exposed to unusually strong wind.
Low frames can still be well engineered. The tilt, row spacing, fixing method and steel grade all matter. A poorly fixed low frame on a windy roof is a bigger risk than a well-designed elevated one.
When an elevated solar structure is the better choice
Elevated structures lift the panels high enough to walk, park or work underneath. In Punjab they are common for:
- Homes that use the roof. Families who dry clothes, sleep outside in summer or keep water tanks on the roof often prefer panels overhead.
- Shading problems. Raising the array can lift panels above the shadow of tanks, parapets or stair rooms.
- Factories and sheds. Panels can be carried over sheet roofs, courtyards and loading areas without loading a weak roof sheet directly. See our industrial and commercial solar page.
- Car parks and petrol pumps. A raised canopy gives shade and generation from the same space.
- Bifacial panels. These collect some light from the back side as well. More height and open space under the panels can help them, though the gain depends on the surface below. Our guide to N-type, P-type and bifacial panels explains this.
Elevated structures need more design work. Column positions, foundations or roof anchor points, bracing and wind loads all have to be worked out for that specific roof. That is why they should be designed by an engineer rather than copied from a standard drawing.
Aluminium vs steel structures
Most solar panel structures in Pakistan are made of galvanised steel, with aluminium used on some projects.
| Material | Strengths | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Galvanised steel (channel, angle, pipe or girder) | Strong, widely available, suits long spans and elevated frames | Quality and thickness of galvanising; welds and cut edges need protection |
| Aluminium structure | Light, does not rust in the same way as steel, neat finish | Section sizes must suit the span; correct fasteners to avoid corrosion where metals meet |
Neither is "always better". The right choice depends on span, height, budget and site conditions. Ask your installer what section sizes and coating they are using, and get it written into the quotation.
What good solar structure design includes
Whatever the type, a sound solar structure design should cover:
- Roof check. What the roof is made of, its condition, and where loads can safely go.
- Panel size. Today's larger panels are longer and heavier than older ones, so rails and clamps must match. Using a frame designed for older, smaller panels is a common mistake.
- Tilt and direction. In Punjab, panels generally face south at a tilt chosen for the site. Our guide to the best solar panel angle and direction for Punjab covers this.
- Row spacing. Rows must be far enough apart that one does not shade the next in winter, when the sun is low.
- Wind and fixing. Anchors, base plates and bracing sized for the exposure of the roof.
- Access. Space to walk between rows for cleaning and inspection. Dust and lint build up fast in Punjab; see how often to clean solar panels.
- Drainage and waterproofing. Fixings should not create leak points in the roof.
- Cable routing. Neat, protected routes for DC cables along the frame.
How Solar Works Pakistan handles structures
At Solar Works Pakistan, structures are treated as part of the engineering, not an add-on.
- Designed in-house. Our own engineering team, including dedicated AutoCAD experts, designs each structure to the project's requirements.
- Fabricated and assembled by our own team on site. We do not hand structural work to an outside crew.
- Customised to the site. We have particular capability in customised and elevated solar structures, from homes to factory sheds.
- 3-year Solar Works Pakistan structure warranty. After the warranty period, the customer is responsible for appropriate maintenance.
Structures are included in our solar installation services and in industrial EPC projects. Projects start at about 6 kW and go up to megawatt scale.
Solar structure price in Pakistan
Structure cost depends heavily on the design, so a single "per panel" figure can mislead. The main factors are height, span, steel or aluminium sections, coating, foundation or anchor work, and the number of panels.
| Structure type | Typical pricing basis | Indicative price |
|---|---|---|
| Low L2 / L3 frame | Per kW or per panel | WhatsApp for today's rate |
| Elevated structure | Per kW, project-specific | WhatsApp for today's rate |
| Industrial shed / canopy structure | Per project, after design | WhatsApp for today's rate |
When comparing quotes, check that each one names the material, section sizes, coating, height and fixing method. Two quotes for "L3 structure" can describe very different amounts of steel. To estimate system size before you ask for a quote, try our solar calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an L2 and L3 solar structure?
Both are low, fixed-tilt frames that sit close to the roof. The names are market terms rather than standards, and fabricators use them a little differently. In general, L3 is a sturdier or taller frame for longer rows. Compare the material, sections and height in each quote rather than relying on the label.
Is an elevated solar structure worth the extra cost?
It is best for homes with high electricity use and limited roof space. Raised rows do not shade each other the way low frames do, so the panels can be packed closer and you fit the most panels, and the most kW, on the roof. The roof also stays usable underneath. It costs more than an L2 or L3 frame, so we compare both at the site survey.
Is an aluminium structure better than steel?
Not always. Aluminium is light and resists rust, while galvanised steel is strong and suits long spans and elevated frames. The right choice depends on the design, span and budget.
Can I reuse my old solar panel stand for new, larger panels?
Often not. Modern panels are larger and heavier than older ones, so rails, clamps and spacing may not fit. An engineer should check the old frame before reuse.
What warranty does Solar Works give on structures?
Solar Works Pakistan gives a 3-year structure warranty on structures it designs and installs. After that period, the customer is responsible for appropriate maintenance.
How high should an elevated solar structure be?
There is no single height. It depends on what you need underneath, shading, wind exposure and the roof's strength. Our engineers set the height during design.
Do structures need maintenance?
Yes. Check bolts, clamps and coating periodically, especially after storms, and look for rust at welds or cut edges. Keeping walkways clear also makes panel cleaning safer.
