Solar for Pharmaceutical and Food Processing Plants
Short answer
Solar for food processing plants and pharmaceutical factories works well because their biggest loads, cooling, HVAC, compressors and process motors, run all day and peak in the hottest, sunniest hours. Almost every unit a well-sized plant produces is used on site. The design work is in protecting sensitive processes: keeping power quality clean, riding through outages with a battery (BESS) and integrating the generator so a dip never spoils a batch.
This guide is for owners and engineers of pharmaceutical units, dairies, bakeries, snack, spice, juice and other food plants in Punjab. For cold stores and ice plants, see our separate guide to solar for cold storage and ice factories.
Why these plants suit solar
- Continuous base load. HVAC, chillers, air compressors and refrigeration run through every shift. That steady load absorbs solar output, so very little is exported.
- Heavy summer cooling. Clean rooms, warehouses and production halls must be held at set temperatures. In a Punjab summer, cooling load is highest at midday, exactly when solar is strongest.
- Large roofs. Production halls and warehouses often have big sheet or RCC roofs.
- Self-use is worth the most. Under net billing, a unit used on site saves the full tariff, while an exported unit earns a much lower rate. See our net metering and net billing guide.

Know your loads: three groups
The first step is a load study that sorts equipment into groups, because each group needs different treatment.
| Load group | Typical examples | What it needs from the power system |
|---|---|---|
| Process-critical | Clean-room air handling, sterilisers, mixers mid-batch, filling and packing lines, control systems, lab and QC instruments | No interruption, or only a very short one; clean voltage |
| Temperature-critical | Chillers, cold rooms, product stores, fermentation or proving rooms | Can tolerate a short break, but not a long one |
| General | Offices, general lighting, workshops, yard lighting, non-production fans | Can wait for the generator or be shed |
Your quality and process team decides what is critical, not the solar engineer. Our job is to build a supply that matches those groups. We do not certify medical, laboratory or process equipment; each item has its own power requirements set by its manufacturer.
Separating critical circuits onto their own distribution boards is often the most useful step a plant can take. It lets a modest battery protect what matters instead of trying to carry the whole factory.
Cooling and HVAC: the load that matters most
In many pharma and food plants, cooling is the largest single use of electricity. Some design points:
- Match solar to the cooling profile. Logged data from the main chillers and air-handling units shows how much load sits in solar hours. That sets the plant size.
- VFDs help both ways. Chillers, pumps and fans on variable frequency drives start gently and draw less at part load. They also reduce the demand peaks that raise MDI charges; see MDI on your electricity bill.
- Starting surges. Large compressors without soft starters or VFDs draw a heavy current when they start. On the grid this is absorbed easily; in backup mode it decides how big the battery inverter or generator must be.
- Roof heat. Panels shade the roof, which can slightly reduce heat gain into the hall below. We do not quote a cooling benefit, because it depends on the building.
Power quality: clean voltage for sensitive equipment
Pharmaceutical and food plants run PLCs, drives, weighing systems and instruments that react badly to voltage dips, spikes and harmonics. A solar plant must not make this worse. We pay attention to:
- Inverter selection. Three-phase inverters with low harmonic distortion, sized and spread to keep phases balanced. See three-phase vs single-phase inverters.
- Earthing and surge protection designed for the whole site, not just the solar side. See solar earthing and surge protection.
- Correct protection and coordination, so a solar fault trips only its own breaker and not the production board.
- Clean cable routes, away from wet wash-down areas and hot pipework, with proper glands and trays.
- Monitoring, so a fault or performance drop is seen early, subject to equipment capability.
If your plant already has power-quality problems, such as nuisance tripping or failed drives, a power-quality check before adding solar is sensible.
BESS: protecting batches through outages
A battery energy storage system is where these plants gain most in reliability. Useful jobs include:
- Bridging the gap to the generator. When the grid fails, the battery carries process-critical loads while the generator starts and stabilises, so a batch is not lost in those seconds.
- Riding through short outages without starting the generator at all.
- Smoothing. The battery absorbs load swings and compressor starts, so the generator runs steadier.
- Shifting solar into the evening. Storing midday surplus for evening shifts, which is worth the full tariff rather than the export rate.
- Peak shaving, where the tariff rewards it.
Whether a hybrid inverter switches over with no break or a very short transfer depends on the product and the wiring. For loads that must never see any interruption, an online UPS on those circuits remains the right tool, with the battery system behind it.
A battery is expensive, so it needs a clear job backed by your data. Our guide Battery storage (BESS) for factories: when does it pay? explains how to judge that. For commercial BESS we work with Huawei, Sungrow and Luminey, chosen per project.
Generator hybrid: keeping the backup you already have
Most pharma and food plants already run a diesel or gas generator. It stays as the long-duration backup. What changes is how it works with solar:
- A controller lets solar share load with the generator while preventing reverse power and keeping the generator above its safe minimum load.
- The battery carries the gap while the generator starts, and reduces how often it needs to.
- Changeover and protection are designed so nothing feeds back into the grid.
Our guide to solar and generator hybrid systems explains the controller logic in plain words. Solar Works Pakistan does not sell generators, but we integrate existing sets where appropriate. Our power-generation experience goes back to the 1980s through our founder, Akram Ullah Khan.
Site and hygiene points
Food and pharma sites have rules that affect how solar is installed:
- Roof access and hygiene. Installation and cleaning routes should avoid production areas, air intakes and open product.
- Panel cleaning water must drain away from intakes and clean zones.
- Sheet roofs over production halls need leak-free fixings; see solar on tin sheet roofs.
- Fire safety. Battery rooms need ventilation, separation and correct protection. See fire safety for rooftop solar and lithium batteries.

Frequently asked questions
Can a pharmaceutical factory run on solar?
Solar can carry a large share of a pharma plant's daytime load, especially HVAC. Night load and outages still need the grid, a generator or a battery. Most plants use solar to cut grid units and a battery plus generator for resilience.
Will solar affect power quality for sensitive equipment?
A well-designed plant should not. Correct inverter selection, phase balance, earthing, surge protection and coordinated breakers keep supply clean. If you already have power-quality problems, check them before adding solar.
Does a food processing plant need a battery with solar?
Not always. A battery earns its place when outages spoil batches, when the generator runs often, or when evening shifts can use stored solar. Without such a job, solar plus a generator controller may be enough.
Can solar keep a batch running during load-shedding?
Standard on-grid solar switches off when the grid fails. A hybrid system with a battery can carry critical loads through the outage and while the generator starts. For loads that cannot see any break, an online UPS is still used on those circuits.
Is net billing important for these plants?
Less than for homes. A plant with continuous cooling and process loads uses almost all its solar on site, which saves the full tariff. Export mostly happens on shutdown days.
Do you work with existing generators?
Yes. We design a controller so solar and the generator share load safely. We do not sell generators.
