Three-Phase vs Single-Phase Solar Inverter for Homes and Factories
Short answer
A three-phase solar inverter is the right choice if your building has a three-phase electricity connection, which is common in larger homes, commercial buildings and almost all factories; a single-phase inverter is for single-phase connections, which most ordinary houses have. The inverter should match your connection, so the first step is to check what supply you have, not which inverter is cheaper.
This guide explains the difference in plain terms, how to check your connection, and when a 3 phase hybrid inverter makes sense.
Single-phase and three-phase in plain words
- Single-phase supply has one live wire and a neutral. Most small and medium houses in Punjab have this. It is fine for normal household loads.
- Three-phase supply has three live wires (phases) and usually a neutral. Power arrives on three lines at once. It carries larger loads more smoothly and is needed for heavy three-phase motors, such as those in factories, large pumps and commercial HVAC.
A single-phase inverter produces power on one line. A three-phase inverter produces balanced power on all three lines at the same time.
Single-phase vs three-phase inverter
Single-phase
Most houses; up to about 10–12 kW; feeds one phase
Three-phase
Large homes, shops, factories; feeds all three phases evenly
Mismatch
Single-phase inverter on a 3-phase supply feeds only one phase
How to check which connection you have
- Look at your electricity bill. The bill shows your tariff category and sanctioned load. A larger sanctioned load often means a three-phase connection, but check the meter to be sure.
- Look at the meter. A three-phase meter is larger and has three incoming live cables (plus neutral). A single-phase meter has one live and one neutral.
- Look at the main distribution board. A three-phase board usually has a three or four-pole main breaker.
- Ask us. Send a photo of your meter and bill on WhatsApp, and our engineers will confirm.
Side-by-side comparison
| Point | Single-phase inverter | Three-phase inverter |
|---|---|---|
| Connection it suits | Single-phase (most houses) | Three-phase (larger homes, commercial, industrial) |
| Typical size range | Small home sizes up to around 10-12 kW | From around 5 kW up to large commercial units of 100 kW and more |
| Power output | One line | Balanced across three lines |
| Runs three-phase motors | No | Yes (on-grid; hybrid backup depends on model) |
| Hybrid (battery) options | Widely available | Available, often with high-voltage batteries |
| Typical buyers | Homes, small shops | Large homes, offices, schools, hospitals, factories |
Size ranges are typical, not limits. Exact ranges vary by brand and model.
Why matching the inverter to your connection matters
A single-phase inverter on a three-phase connection
This is a common mistake. If you put a single-phase inverter on one phase of a three-phase connection:
- It only feeds that one phase. Loads on the other two phases still draw fully from the grid.
- Your solar output may not offset your bill as expected, depending on how your meter calculates across phases.
- Phases can become unbalanced, which some utilities and equipment do not like.
In some cases engineers use three matched single-phase inverters, one per phase. This can work, but it needs careful design. For most three-phase sites, a single three-phase inverter is simpler.
A three-phase inverter on a single-phase connection
This does not work. A three-phase inverter needs all three phases present to operate.
3 phase hybrid inverters: backup for larger homes and businesses
A 3 phase hybrid inverter does everything an on-grid three-phase inverter does, and also charges and discharges a battery. That gives you backup during load-shedding on all three phases, within the inverter's backup rating.
Points to know:
- Battery voltage. Many three-phase hybrids are designed for high-voltage battery stacks rather than the 48 V batteries common with home single-phase hybrids. Inverter and battery must be chosen as a pair. See our lithium battery price in Pakistan page for Luminey and current Huawei and Sungrow options options.
- Backup output. The backup (EPS) output may be lower than the inverter's full grid-tied rating. Check what it can actually carry during an outage.
- Unbalanced loads. Some three-phase hybrids can deliver different amounts of power on each phase during backup; others need loads to be reasonably balanced. This matters in homes where most appliances sit on one phase.
- Three-phase motors in backup. If you need a three-phase motor, such as a large water pump, to run during outages, check this specifically with the model's datasheet.
Huawei and Sungrow are common choices for three-phase hybrid systems. See our Huawei and Sungrow pages.
Which should a home choose?
| Your house | Our usual starting point |
|---|---|
| Single-phase, a few fans, fridge, one or two ACs | Single-phase hybrid, typically 6-10 kW |
| Single-phase, large load, wants more solar | Ask about upgrading to three-phase with your DISCO, then design |
| Three-phase, mainly wants to cut daytime bills | Three-phase on-grid inverter |
| Three-phase, wants backup during load-shedding | Three-phase hybrid with a matched battery |

Which should a factory choose?
Factories almost always have three-phase supply, and their motors, compressors and machines need balanced three-phase power. For these sites:
- Three-phase on-grid inverters are the core of most industrial solar systems, often several inverters working together.
- Generator integration may be needed where a generator covers outages. The system must be designed so solar and generator work safely together.
- BESS (battery energy storage) can add backup, shift solar into the evening, or help manage demand peaks, when designed for that purpose.
This is engineering work, not a product choice. Solar Works Pakistan specialises in industrial EPC, hybrid systems and BESS, and has served 50+ industrial clients, including textile, dyeing and loom units. See our industrial and commercial solar page.
Price difference
A three-phase inverter usually costs more than a single-phase model of the same kW, and a three-phase hybrid costs more again because of its battery charger and backup output. How we decide for you
Our in-house engineers check your connection, sanctioned load, bills and what must run during outages. After a site survey (normally free), we design the system and give a detailed quotation naming the inverter brand, model and manufacturer's warranty. Installation is by our own teams, and we test every system before handover.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I need a three-phase solar inverter?
If your building has a three-phase connection, you should normally use a three-phase inverter. Check your meter (three incoming live cables) or send us a photo of your meter and bill and we will confirm.
Can I use a single-phase inverter on a three-phase connection?
It is possible, but it only feeds one phase, so loads on the other two phases still draw fully from the grid. For most three-phase sites, a three-phase inverter, or a carefully designed set of single-phase inverters, is the better approach.
Is a 3 phase hybrid inverter worth it for a home?
If you have three-phase supply and want backup during load-shedding, yes, it is the natural choice. Check the backup output, how it handles unbalanced loads, and which battery it needs.
Do three-phase hybrid inverters use 48 V batteries?
Some do, but many are designed for high-voltage battery stacks. The inverter and battery must be compatible, so we choose them as a pair.
Is a three-phase inverter more efficient?
Not necessarily for the same size. The main benefit is that it delivers balanced power to a three-phase connection. Efficiency depends on the specific model.
Can a three-phase inverter run motors during load-shedding?
An on-grid inverter switches off during outages. A three-phase hybrid can provide backup, but whether it can start a particular motor depends on its backup rating and the motor's start-up current. We check this during design.
