How Often Should You Clean Solar Panels in Dusty Punjab?
Short answer
In most of Punjab, check your solar panels at least every two weeks and clean them whenever a dust layer is visible, which in dry, dusty months can mean weekly. Clean early in the morning or in the evening, with clean water and a soft brush, never with a pressure washer or harsh chemicals. Factories near lint, cement or road dust may need a more frequent cleaning routine.
Why cleaning matters more in Punjab
Solar panels make power from light that reaches the cells. Anything sitting on the glass, such as dust, bird droppings, lint or a sticky smog film, blocks some of that light. Punjab has several sources that build up quickly:
- Dry-season dust from roads, construction and open land, especially before the monsoon.
- Winter smog in Lahore, Faisalabad and other cities. The smog itself cuts sunlight, and the particles leave a greasy film on glass. Our guide on solar panels in fog and smog explains the seasonal effect.
- Textile lint and fibre around spinning, weaving and loom units in Faisalabad.
- Bird droppings, which block light on a few cells and can create hot spots.
- Industrial dust from cement, flour, feed or brick works nearby.
Rain helps, but light rain often leaves streaks of mud rather than washing panels clean.

How often to clean: a practical schedule
There is no single correct interval. Use this as a starting point, then adjust based on what you see and what your monitoring app shows.
| Site | Suggested check | Typical cleaning need |
|---|---|---|
| Home in a quiet residential area | Every 2 weeks | Every 2 to 4 weeks, more in dry months |
| Home near a main road or construction | Weekly | Weekly to every 2 weeks |
| Shop, school or office roof | Weekly | Every 1 to 2 weeks |
| Textile, dyeing or loom unit | Several times a week | Weekly, sometimes more often |
| Site near cement, flour or brick works | Several times a week | Set by monitoring and inspection |
These are general guidelines, not manufacturer instructions. Always follow the cleaning section of your panel manufacturer's installation manual.
Let your monitoring app tell you
Most modern inverters, including Huawei, Sungrow, Solis and GoodWe, come with a monitoring app. Compare output on clear, sunny days. If generation drops on a clear day and the panels look dusty, it is time to clean. A sudden drop with clean panels points to a different fault and needs an engineer.
The safe way to clean solar plates
Follow these steps for routine solar plate cleaning.
- Pick the right time. Clean early in the morning or late afternoon, when panels are cool. Cold water on hot glass in the middle of a summer day can stress the glass.
- Stay safe. Do not stand on panels. Use walkways and safe access. On high or sloping roofs, use a proper harness or call a professional.
- Do not touch wiring. Never open junction boxes, connectors or cables. Panels produce voltage whenever light falls on them.
- Rinse first. Use low-pressure water to loosen loose dust.
- Brush gently. Use a soft-bristle solar panel cleaning brush or a soft sponge on a pole. Avoid hard brushes, scourers and anything abrasive.
- Rinse again. Wash off loosened dirt from top to bottom.
- Let it dry or wipe. A rubber squeegee or soft cloth reduces water marks.
What to avoid
- Pressure washers at close range, which can damage seals and the frame edge.
- Detergents, washing powder or strong chemicals, which can leave a residue and may harm the anti-reflective coating. If you must use something, a small amount of mild, non-abrasive soap is generally the most that is advised. Check your panel manual.
- Walking or kneeling on panels, which can cause micro-cracks you cannot see.
- Cleaning during rain, storms or strong winds.
Water quality: why hard water matters
Many Punjab homes and factories use borewell water, which is often hard. Hard water dries into white mineral spots on the glass. Over time those spots can block light much like dust.
- Use the softest, cleanest water available. Filtered or softened water is better than raw borewell water.
- Do not let water dry in the sun on hot glass. Squeegee or wipe instead.
- If white marks already exist, ask a professional before using any cleaner on them.
Smog and lint: special cases
Winter smog. In November to January, smog leaves a sticky film that dry brushing alone may not lift. A water rinse followed by a gentle brush usually works better. Expect lower output in smog regardless of cleaning, because less sunlight reaches the ground.
Textile lint. Lint can cling to the glass and build up along the lower frame edge, trapping dust and moisture. Factories should include panel inspection in their routine housekeeping. Structure design helps too. Rows with proper walkways make cleaning faster and safer. Our guide to L2, L3 and elevated structures covers access spacing.
Automatic solar panel cleaning systems
Automatic cleaning systems range from fixed sprinkler lines to robotic brushes that travel along rows. They can make sense for large, flat commercial and industrial arrays where manual cleaning is slow or risky.
Before choosing one, ask:
- Does it suit the panel size, frame type and row layout?
- How much water does it use, and what water quality does it need?
- Is it approved by the panel manufacturer, so it does not affect the panel warranty?
- Who maintains the cleaning system itself?
For most homes, a good brush, safe access and a regular routine are enough. For factories, the decision should be part of the plant design. See our industrial and commercial solar page.
DIY or a solar panel cleaning service?
Solar Works Pakistan offers a panel cleaning service in Faisalabad, Lahore and across Punjab, alone or as part of after-sales maintenance. WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 to book.
Doing it yourself is fine for a small, flat, easily reached roof, as long as you follow the safe method above. Use a professional solar panel washing service when:
- the roof is high, sloping or has no safe access;
- the array is large, such as on a factory or school;
- panels have stubborn marks, lint build-up or bird droppings that will not shift;
- output stays low after cleaning, which suggests a fault rather than dirt.
If output is low even after cleaning, contact the installer. For systems we install, after-sales service is handled by our own engineering team, and we target sending service personnel within 48 hours of a registered complaint to begin diagnosis. Our solar installation services page explains the support we provide.

Frequently asked questions
How often should solar panels be cleaned in Pakistan?
In most of Punjab, check them every two weeks and clean whenever dust is visible. In dry, dusty months or near roads and factories, weekly cleaning is common. Your monitoring app is the best guide.
Can I clean solar panels with tap water?
Yes, if it is reasonably clean and not very hard. Hard borewell water can leave white mineral spots, so wipe or squeegee the glass instead of letting it dry in the sun.
What is the best time of day to clean solar plates?
Early morning or late afternoon, when the glass is cool. Avoid cleaning hot panels at midday, and never clean during storms or strong wind.
Can I use soap or detergent on solar panels?
Avoid detergents and washing powder. Plain water and a soft brush handle most dirt. If needed, a small amount of mild, non-abrasive soap is generally the limit; follow your panel manufacturer's manual.
Does rain clean solar panels?
Heavy rain helps, but light rain often leaves mud streaks. It does not replace regular cleaning in dusty areas.
Is an automatic solar panel cleaning system worth it?
It can be for large commercial and industrial arrays. For most homes, a manual routine is simpler. Check that any system suits your panels and does not affect the manufacturer's warranty.
