On-grid or hybrid: how to choose when outages are the problem
Short answer
If your area rarely loses power and you mainly want a lower bill, on-grid is the cheaper system. If load-shedding stops your work, your sleep or your business, a hybrid system with a LiFePO₄ battery is the one that keeps you running. Most homes in Faisalabad and Lahore sit somewhere in between, so the decision comes down to two questions: how many hours do you lose, and what can you not afford to switch off?
What each system does in an outage
- On-grid: panels and a grid-tied inverter. When the grid goes, the inverter must switch off for the safety of line workers. The panels on the roof produce nothing for you until the grid returns, even at midday.
- Hybrid: panels, a hybrid inverter and a battery working as one system. When the grid goes, the inverter carries the backup loads from the panels and the battery.
Question 1: how many hours do you lose?
Write down a normal week of outages for your feeder, day and night. Short, rare cuts usually don't justify a battery. Long or nightly outages usually do.
Question 2: what can you not switch off?
List the loads that must stay on: fans and lights, the fridge, a water pump, an inverter AC in one room, a computer or a shop counter. That list, not the whole house, decides the battery size and the backup panel. Running everything in the house from a battery costs far more than running what matters.
Net billing changes the maths
Under net billing, units you export are bought back at a much lower rate than the units you import. A battery lets you use your own daytime solar in the evening instead of exporting it cheaply. See our net metering and net billing guide.
A simple way to decide
| Your situation | Usually the better fit |
|---|---|
| Few outages, bill is the main problem | On-grid |
| Daily load-shedding, essential loads must run | Hybrid |
| Business that loses money in every outage | Hybrid, sized to the critical loads |
| Want backup later, budget tight now | On-grid now with a battery-ready plan, or a hybrid inverter without a battery at first |
Upgrading later
An on-grid system can be upgraded later, but it usually means changing the inverter or adding a second one. If backup is likely within a year or two, it's often cheaper to choose a hybrid inverter from the start. See upgrades and battery integration.
