What you will see
- An RCD, RCCB or RCBO trips when the grid fails.
- The trip occurs only while a particular appliance runs on backup.
- Grid operation appears normal, but battery operation is interrupted.
- The issue begins after backup circuits or a changeover arrangement are altered.
Why it happens
Residual-current protection detects an imbalance in current through the monitored conductors. Correct operation depends on the supply arrangement as well as the protective device. In some inverter systems, internal switching changes the neutral/earth arrangement between operating modes.
That makes the exact installation important. An electrician may need to investigate leakage, circuit-neutral routing, switching arrangements and device suitability. This is not a reason to add a neutral-earth link as a general remedy.
An appliance working on grid power does not settle the diagnosis. Record whether the trip happens immediately at changeover or later when a particular load operates. The distinction helps guide a controlled professional investigation.
For properties with several distribution boards, include which board loses power. A description such as “the whole system trips” can conceal that only one protected group of circuits is affected.
Grid mode and backup mode are different circuits
On grid
Supply arrangement comes from the utility. Device holds.
On backup
Inverter supplies the circuit. Neutral and switching paths change.
Working on grid power does not settle the diagnosis.
What you can check yourself
- Photograph the visible protective-device label without removing a cover.
- Record whether the trip occurs at changeover or after backup has been running.
- List appliances operating on the affected circuits.
- Note recent electrical changes, appliance replacements or moisture incidents.
- Save any inverter warnings with the same event time.
- If circuit labels or a handover drawing are available, include them. Do not trace conductors inside a board to identify the neutral arrangement yourself.
What not to do
- Do not remove earth wires, bridge the device, increase its trip threshold or add neutral-earth connections. Do not copy another installation’s changeover wiring or repeatedly reset a device that continues to trip.
When to call us
- Request an electrician’s review before relying on the affected backup circuits again. Testing should establish protective operation in the relevant supply modes and identify the cause of the trips.
