What you will see
- High-voltage alarms during periods of substantial export.
- Different voltage readings at different points in the installation.
- Problems that become more noticeable as power increases.
- A long route introduced when the inverter or connection point was relocated.
- Different screens may update at different times, so apparently conflicting values should first be compared on a consistent basis.
Why it happens
AC conductors have resistance. Current through a cable causes losses and a voltage difference along its length. During consumption this can reduce voltage at the load; during PV export, the inverter end can sit at a higher voltage than the grid connection. Route length and conductor selection matter.
This does not mean every high-voltage alarm is caused by undersized wiring. The investigation should establish the supply conditions and compare appropriate measurements at the relevant locations under known operating conditions.
The solution should follow those findings. Replacing a cable based only on its approximate length may leave the actual cause unresolved.
Voltage changes along the cable
When exporting, voltage at the inverter can sit above the connection point. Compare readings at the same time before blaming the cable.
What you can check yourself
- Note whether the problem occurs during export, consumption or both.
- Record the time, inverter power and displayed warning.
- Provide an approximate route description from existing plans or knowledge.
- Mention extensions, jointing work or a recent inverter relocation.
- Save simultaneous screenshots where the monitoring system allows it.
- Measurements inside electrical boards or at inverter terminals belong to a qualified professional.
What not to do
- Do not raise grid-protection limits to conceal repeated voltage alarms. Do not choose a replacement cable from a rule based only on inverter kilowatts or route length. Do not touch a cable or termination to test whether it is hot.
When to call us
- Arrange a cable and supply assessment when voltage problems follow a clear power-related pattern or begin after a route change. Visible damage or burning needs urgent attention.
