Rooftop Solar Power for Homes in Pakistan: Complete Buyer's Guide
Short answer
Rooftop solar power for a Pakistani home comes down to eight steps: read your bill, size the system, choose on-grid or hybrid, check your roof and structure, choose panels, compare detailed quotes, handle the grid paperwork, and get after-sales support in writing. Get those right and the brand names matter less than most people think. This guide walks through each step in plain language.
Why homes in Punjab are going solar
Electricity tariffs have risen sharply, summers are long, and load-shedding still hits many areas. Solar panels for home use make sense in Punjab because the sun is strong for most of the year and peak household use (fans, ACs, water pumps) lines up with daylight hours.
But a rooftop solar system is a 20-plus-year electrical installation on your house. It deserves the same care you would give to a new roof or a new floor. The steps below are the ones our engineers follow for every home.
Eight steps to rooftop solar for your home
- 1Read 12 months of bills
- 2Size the system
- 3On-grid or hybrid
- 4Check roof and structure
- 5Choose 615 W+ panels
- 6Compare quotes line by line
- 7Net billing paperwork
- 8Install, hand over, support
Step 1: Read your electricity bill
Your bill is the most useful sizing document you have. Collect the last 12 months, either paper bills or the history printed on the back of the latest one.
Look for:
- Units consumed each month (kWh). Note the highest month, usually June to August.
- Sanctioned load (kW). This matters for grid connection rules.
- Single-phase or three-phase connection. It decides which inverter you need.
- Tariff and fixed charges. These affect how much solar will cut from your bill.
If you are building a new house and have no bill yet, list your appliances instead: number of fans, ACs (and their tonnage), fridge, motor, iron, washing machine and so on.
Step 2: Size the system
Size is about matching what you use, not about filling the roof.
A simple first estimate (example arithmetic only): if your highest summer bill shows 1,200 units, that is about 40 units a day. Assuming roughly 5 useful sun hours per day for illustration, 40 รท 5 = 8 kW. Actual output changes with season, dust, smog, shading and panel angle, so treat this as a starting figure that a site survey will refine.
As a rough guide for Punjab homes:
| Typical home | Common system size |
|---|---|
| 5 to 7 marla, 1 inverter AC | 6 kW |
| 10 marla, 2 ACs | 8 to 10 kW |
| 1 kanal, 3 or more ACs | 12 to 15 kW |
| Large house with heavy AC and motor load | 15 to 20 kW+ |
These are rough bands, not rules. Two houses the same size can use very different amounts of power. Solar Works Pakistan designs home systems from about 6 kW upwards; if you were thinking of 2 or 3 kW, check your bill first, because a system that small rarely covers a Punjab summer.
Our solar calculator gives a quick estimate. If air conditioning is your main concern, see solar for AC.
Step 3: Choose the system type
There are three main ways to set up a solar energy system for home use:
| Type | Battery | Works in load-shedding? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-grid | No | No (shuts down for safety) | Homes with reliable grid that mainly want lower daytime bills |
| Hybrid | Yes | Yes, for connected loads | Homes with load-shedding or high evening use |
| Off-grid | Yes | Yes, but no grid support | Sites with no or very poor grid |
Most Punjab homes choose between on-grid and hybrid. The rules for exporting power have changed: under the NEPRA (Prosumer) Regulations 2026, new rooftop solar users move to net billing, where exported units are bought back at a far lower rate than imported units cost. In general, that means using your own solar power is worth more than selling it, which makes a battery or careful sizing more attractive. Our net metering and net billing guide covers the current rules in depth, and hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid helps you choose.
Choosing a solar inverter for home
The solar power inverter for home use is the brain of the system. Check:
- Phase: single-phase for most homes, three-phase where your connection is three-phase.
- Type: on-grid or hybrid, to match Step 3.
- Battery compatibility: a hybrid inverter must work with the battery voltage and brand you choose.
- Monitoring: an app that shows generation and battery status.
- Room to grow: enough input capacity if you plan to add panels later.
We supply Solis, GoodWe, Sungrow, Knox, Inverex, Luminey, Huawei and Primax inverters. See the solar inverter price page for today's options.
Choosing a battery
If you go hybrid, size the battery for the loads you actually need at night or during outages, not for the whole house. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are now the usual choice for new systems. We supply Luminey, Dyness, Pylontech, BYD and Soluna batteries, with current Huawei and Sungrow options on request; see lithium battery price and the battery size guide.
Step 4: Check your roof and structure
The roof decides how many panels fit and what structure you need.
- Direction and shade. South-facing, unshaded space produces the most. Water tanks, stairwell rooms, neighbouring buildings and trees all cast shadows that cut output.
- Space. As a rough guide, a 10 kW system with today's 615 W+ panels takes about 15 to 17 panels, plus walkway space for cleaning.
- Roof condition. Fix leaks and weak slabs before installation, not after.
- Use of the roof. If you dry clothes, keep water tanks or sit on the roof, an elevated structure keeps the space usable underneath.
The structure holds your panels through storms and summer heat for many years, so it is not the place to save money. At Solar Works Pakistan, structures are designed in-house by our engineering team, then fabricated and assembled on site by our own team, and carry a 3-year structure warranty. Read L2 vs L3 vs elevated structures to see which suits your roof.
Step 5: Choose panels
Solar panels (also called solar plates) are the part most people focus on. For a home system:
- Wattage: most homes now use panels in the roughly 580 to 620 W range. Bigger panels mean fewer pieces but need more careful structure and handling.
- Technology: N-type panels are now common in new stock; older P-type panels are often sold at a discount.
- Brand and paperwork: ask for the brand, model and serial list on the quote, and check the panels are genuine. See how to check genuine solar panels.
We supply LONGi, JinkoSolar, Canadian Solar, JA Solar, AIKO, Cora Dawn and Jasco panels. Compare current options on our solar panel price in Pakistan page.
Step 6: Compare quotes properly
The lowest total is rarely the best value. Ask every company for a written quotation with a BOQ that lists:
- Panel brand, model, wattage and quantity.
- Inverter brand, model, phase and type.
- Battery brand, model and usable capacity (hybrid only).
- Structure type and height.
- Cable brand and size for DC and AC runs.
- Protection: DC and AC breakers, surge protection and earthing.
- Installation, testing and commissioning.
- Warranties: manufacturer's warranty per product, plus the installer's own structure and service terms.
- What is excluded (transport, civil work, DISCO fees).
- Payment schedule and expected timeline.
If a quote is vague on any of these, ask. For a line-by-line view, read solar installation cost beyond the panels, and for today's complete-system figures see solar system price in Pakistan.
Step 7: Grid paperwork
If you want to export power to the grid, you need an approved net-billing (formerly net-metering) connection from your distribution company, such as FESCO or LESCO, and a bidirectional (green) meter. The process involves an application, technical documents, an inspection and fees set by the DISCO and NEPRA. A system can still run and cut your bills without an export connection, but surplus power will not be credited.
Step 8: Installation, handover and after-sales
A well-run installation follows a clear sequence: site survey, design, BOQ, advance payment, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, then handover. At handover you should be shown how to read the inverter, use the monitoring app and switch the system off safely.
Small home projects are normally completed in about one week, subject to timely payment, equipment availability and site readiness.
After-sales matters as much as the installation. Ask who you will call if something goes wrong, and get it in writing. At Solar Works Pakistan:
- After-sales is handled by our own engineering and technical staff, not passed to a third party.
- Our target is to send service personnel within 48 hours of a registered complaint to begin diagnosis.
- A 1-year service warranty applies under the project terms; after that, service is charged when needed.
- Panels, inverters and batteries carry the manufacturer's warranty for each product.
See our solar installation services page for how we work.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying on panel price alone and ignoring the inverter, structure and protection.
- Sizing to the roof, not the bill. More panels than you can use or export usefully may not pay back well under net billing.
- Skipping surge protection and earthing. They protect your equipment and your family.
- Accepting a verbal quote. If it is not written down, it is hard to hold anyone to it.
- Choosing an installer with no local service team. Problems are rare but they do happen.

Frequently asked questions
What size solar system do I need for my home?
Start with your highest monthly units from the last 12 bills, divide by 30 for daily use, then divide by average sun hours to get a rough size. Most Punjab homes we design fall between 6 kW and 15 kW. A site survey confirms the final size.
Is rooftop solar worth it under net billing?
It can be, but the way to get value has shifted. Under net billing, using your own solar power is generally worth more than exporting it, so systems should be sized to your self-use and may include a battery. We look at your bill pattern before recommending a size.
Should I choose an on-grid or hybrid system for my home?
Choose on-grid if your grid is reliable and you mainly want lower daytime bills. Choose hybrid if you face load-shedding or use a lot of power in the evening. Hybrid costs more because of the battery and inverter.
How much roof space do solar panels for home need?
As a rough guide, a 10 kW system with 615 W+ panels uses about 15 to 17 panels, plus space for walkways and row gaps. Shade from tanks and walls reduces usable space. Our survey measures this on site.
Which solar inverter is best for home use?
It depends on your phase, whether you want a battery and how large the system is. A single-phase hybrid suits many homes; larger homes on three-phase need a three-phase inverter. We supply Solis, GoodWe, Sungrow, Knox, Inverex, Luminey, Huawei and Primax.
How long does home solar installation take?
Small projects are normally completed in about one week, subject to timely payment, equipment availability and site readiness.
What warranty comes with a home solar system?
Panels, inverters and batteries carry the manufacturer's warranty for each product. Solar Works Pakistan structures carry a 3-year structure warranty, and a 1-year service warranty applies under the project terms.
