Solar for AC: How Many Solar Panels for a 1 or 1.5 Ton AC?

Short answer

For daytime use, a 1 ton inverter AC usually needs about 1.5 to 2 kW of solar panels and a 1.5 ton inverter AC about 2 to 3 kW: roughly three to five of today's 615 W panels. Running the same AC at night also needs a battery, and that is where most of the cost sits. An AC is best sized as part of a whole-home solar system rather than on its own.

This guide explains the sizing, the difference between a normal inverter AC on solar and a "solar AC" unit, and what to check before you buy. The solar air conditioner price in Pakistan depends far more on the system around the AC than on the AC itself.

How much power does an inverter AC actually use?

An inverter AC pulls high power while it cools the room down, then slows its compressor and holds the temperature at a much lower draw. Use depends on room size, insulation, roof exposure, set temperature and outdoor heat. Typical ranges in Punjab summers, indicative only:

AC sizeDraw while cooling downAverage once settledEnergy for 8 hours (indicative)
1 ton inverter0.9–1.2 kW0.5–0.8 kW4–6.5 kWh
1.5 ton inverter1.4–1.8 kW0.8–1.2 kW6.5–9.5 kWh
2 ton inverter1.8–2.4 kW1.1–1.6 kW9–13 kWh

A non-inverter (fixed-speed) AC draws close to its full rating whenever the compressor runs and pulls a large surge each time it starts. It can run on solar, but needs more panels and a larger inverter for the same comfort. If you are buying a new AC for solar, choose an inverter AC.

How many solar panels for a 1 ton or 1.5 ton AC?

Panels rarely produce their full rated wattage: heat, dust, haze and sun angle all reduce output. A useful rule is to size the array at about 1.5 to 2 times the AC's average running draw, so it keeps up through the middle of the day.

So how many solar plates are required for a 1 ton AC? About three to four of today's 615 W panels, if the AC runs mainly in daylight. For a 1.5 ton AC, plan on four to five. These are starting points, not a design. For other panel counts, see how many solar panels for a 5 kW or 10 kW system.

Why we size the whole home, not just the AC

Very few homes want to run one AC and nothing else. Fans, the fridge, lights, a water pump and a second AC share the same supply. We design systems from about 6 kW upwards, because that size can carry a typical home's daytime load with one or more ACs running. A 2 to 3 kW "AC-only" setup leaves the rest of the house on the grid and is hard to expand cleanly later.

For two 1.5 ton ACs by day plus the normal household load, 6 to 10 kW is a common starting point. Use the solar calculator for a first estimate, then see the complete solar system price in Pakistan.

Running an AC at night: you need a battery

Panels produce nothing after sunset. To run an AC at night without the grid, the energy must come from a battery charged during the day. For example, a 1.5 ton inverter AC averaging 1 kW for 6 hours at night:

Round illustrative numbers. Real night use is often lower as the outdoor temperature drops, but humid July and August nights keep the compressor busy. That is why battery-backed AC use costs much more than daytime-only use. See how many kWh of battery you need and current options on the lithium battery price page.

Day only, grid at night, or battery at night?

The hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid guide explains these system types.

Normal inverter AC on solar vs a "solar AC"

1. A normal inverter AC on a solar system. The AC is an ordinary 230 V AC unit. The solar inverter turns panel power into normal household electricity, and the AC does not know where its power comes from. When the sun is weak, the inverter tops up from the grid or the battery. This is the most common and most flexible setup.

2. A dedicated DC or "hybrid solar" AC unit. These take DC power directly from panels, sometimes mixed with grid power. Fewer conversion steps, but fewer models, limited local service for some units, and wiring that only suits that unit. If it fails, you cannot simply swap in a standard AC.

Why we recommend a normal inverter AC with a solar inverter

A dedicated solar AC can look cheaper up front, because the panels feed the AC directly and you skip the solar inverter. But those panels can only power that one AC. When the AC is switched off, at night in winter or on a mild day, the solar power has nowhere to go, and you cannot use it for fans, the fridge, lights, a water pump or anything else. It also cannot run at night on solar, because no home battery system works with it; after sunset it falls back to the grid, if it has a grid connection at all.

With a normal inverter AC on a solar inverter, the same panels run the AC when it is on, and the rest of the house when it is off. In Punjab, ACs run hard for a few months a year; the solar system works every month. That is why we do not supply DC "solar AC" units, and why we recommend a normal inverter AC on a solar system for every home and shop.

Solar AC price in Pakistan

The cost of running an AC on solar is mostly the panels, inverter and, for night use, the battery.

Five things to check before running ACs on solar

  1. The AC's real rating. Read the rating plate for input power in watts, not just the tonnage.
  2. Inverter size and surge. The inverter must handle the AC's start-up current plus everything else running at the same time.
  3. Phase. Larger homes with several ACs often have a three-phase connection; the inverter should match.
  4. Roof space and shade. Each 615 W+ panel needs roughly 2.7 to 3 square metres of clear roof. Shade from water tanks or neighbouring buildings cuts output.
  5. Wiring and protection. ACs draw heavy current. Correct cable sizes, breakers and earthing matter for safety.

Engineering and design are done in-house and installation by our own teams. After a site survey (normally free), we size the system around your actual load, including your ACs, and give a quotation listing each item's brand, model and quantity. Frequently asked questions

How many solar panels are required for a 1.5 ton AC?

For daytime use, about 2 to 3 kW of panels, around four to five 615 W panels. It depends on the AC's real draw, your roof and how hot the room gets. Night use needs a battery as well.

Can a 1 ton AC run directly on solar panels without an inverter?

A normal AC cannot: it needs 230 V AC power, so a solar inverter must convert the panels' DC output. Dedicated DC "solar AC" units take DC directly, but their panels then power only that AC. We recommend a normal inverter AC on a solar inverter so the panels can run the whole house when the AC is off.

Is a solar AC better than a normal AC on solar?

Usually not. A solar AC may save some up-front cost, but when it is switched off its panels cannot power anything else, and it cannot run at night because no battery is compatible with it. A normal inverter AC with a solar inverter uses the same panels for the whole house all year.

Can I run an AC on solar at night?

Yes, with a battery charged during the day, or by switching to the grid at night. A 1.5 ton inverter AC averaging 1 kW for 6 hours needs about 6 kWh, so battery and panels must be sized for that on top of the rest of the home.

Is an inverter AC better for solar than a non-inverter AC?

Yes. It runs at lower power once the room is cool and avoids the large start-up surge of a fixed-speed AC, so you need fewer panels, a smaller inverter and a smaller battery.

What size solar system do I need for two ACs?

For two 1.5 ton inverter ACs in daytime plus normal household loads, 6 to 10 kW is a common starting point. A site survey and your past bills give a more accurate answer.

Does a solar AC work on cloudy or foggy days?

Output falls under overcast skies, so the AC draws the difference from the grid or a battery. A normal inverter AC on a hybrid system handles this automatically, and AC demand is usually lower on cloudy days.

Do you install small 1 to 2 kW systems just for one AC?

We design systems from about 6 kW upwards. That size runs one or more ACs along with the rest of the home and is easier to expand than a small single-purpose setup.
