Solar for Hospitals and Clinics: Backup, Reliability and BESS
Short answer
Solar for hospitals works when it is designed as part of the power system, not bolted on: solar cuts daytime grid and fuel use, a battery (BESS) bridges outages, and the generator stays as the long-duration backup. Hospitals run around the clock and some loads cannot be interrupted, so the design starts with separating critical loads from everything else. Solar is an energy-saving and resilience measure; it does not replace the hospital's own engineering checks for medical equipment.
This guide is for owners and administrators of private hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centres and nursing homes in Punjab.
What makes a hospital different
- 24-hour load. Wards, lighting, cooling, lifts, pumps and IT run day and night. Solar covers the day; the night needs grid, battery or generator.
- Critical loads. Some areas cannot lose power even for seconds. Others can wait for the generator to start.
- Heavy cooling. Operation theatres, wards and labs need cooling for long hours, especially in Punjab summers.
- Outages are not just costly, they are risky. Reliability comes first, savings second.

Step 1: split the loads into tiers
Before any panels are sized, list every load and put it in a tier. The hospital's own clinical and biomedical staff decide what is critical. The solar engineer's job is to build a supply that matches those tiers.
| Tier | Examples (decided by the hospital) | Supply design |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | Loads the hospital says must never drop: certain theatre, ICU, emergency and IT circuits | Separate distribution board; battery/UPS supply with no break; generator behind it |
| Essential | Ward lighting, nurse stations, pumps, lifts, key cooling | Battery and/or generator after a short changeover |
| General | Offices, general cooling, parking lights, non-essential areas | Grid and solar; can be shed during long outages |
Separating these circuits is often the single most useful thing a hospital can do, solar or not. It lets a modest battery protect what matters instead of trying to carry the whole building.
Important: we do not make claims about medical equipment. Each medical device has its own power-quality and backup requirements, set by its manufacturer and the hospital's biomedical team. Our design supplies the circuits; it does not certify the equipment on them.
Step 2: solar for the daytime energy
Hospitals use a lot of energy between morning and late afternoon: outpatient departments, theatres, labs, imaging and cooling. Solar supplies that load directly, so almost all of it is used on site.
Under the net billing rules in force since February 2026, units used on site are worth your full tariff, while exported units earn a much lower rate. A hospital's steady daytime load means little is exported, which suits net billing well. See our net metering and net billing guide.
Most hospitals are on three-phase supply, so three-phase inverters are used. See three-phase vs single-phase inverters.
Step 3: battery storage (BESS) for resilience
A BESS is where a hospital system earns its reliability.
- Bridging outages. When the grid fails, a properly designed battery system carries critical and essential loads while the generator starts and stabilises.
- Short outages without the generator. Many outages are short. A battery can carry them, so the generator starts less often.
- Evening and night use. Solar stored by day can serve evening load, worth your full tariff.
- Smoothing. The battery handles load swings, so the generator runs steadier.
Two ratings matter: power (kW), which decides how much load the battery can carry at once, and energy (kWh), which decides for how long. A hospital battery is usually sized for the critical and essential tiers, for a set number of hours, with margin for ageing and temperature.
Whether a hybrid inverter switches without any break, or with a very short transfer, depends on the product and how it is wired. For loads the hospital says cannot see any interruption, an online UPS on those circuits remains the right tool.
For commercial BESS and hybrid inverters we work with Huawei, Sungrow and Luminey, chosen per project. Our guide BESS for factories explains how to judge a battery's job; the same logic applies to hospitals.
Step 4: integrate the generator
The generator stays. It is the backup for long outages, which solar and a battery cannot economically cover on their own. What changes is how it works with the rest of the system:
- A controller lets solar share load with the generator without pushing power back into it or running it too lightly.
- The battery can carry the gap until the generator is ready, and reduce how often it starts.
- Changeover and protection are designed so that nothing ever feeds back into the grid.
Our guide to solar and generator hybrid systems explains the controller logic in plain words. Solar Works Pakistan does not sell generators, but integrates existing sets where appropriate.
Clean, stable power
Hospital equipment is sensitive. A well-designed solar and battery system can improve supply quality, but only with attention to detail:
- Earthing and surge protection designed for the whole site. See solar earthing and surge protection.
- Correct breakers and RCDs for each circuit. See MCB, MCCB and RCCB for solar.
- Inverters chosen for low harmonic distortion and matched to the load.
- Neat, labelled distribution boards so staff can identify critical circuits quickly.
- Monitoring, so problems are seen early, subject to equipment capability.
All tests required for safe commissioning are completed before handover.
Clinics and smaller facilities
A clinic or diagnostic centre usually runs mainly by day, so the case looks more like a commercial building: on-grid or hybrid solar for daytime use, a battery sized for the critical room or equipment circuits, and the generator for long outages. Our guide to hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid helps with the choice. Systems start from about 6 kW.

How Solar Works Pakistan works with hospitals
Hospitals are one of the sectors we serve. Our specialist areas are hybrid power systems and BESS, and our power-generation experience goes back to the 1980s through our founder, Akram Ullah Khan, whose career includes WAPDA and Saudi Electricity Company. Solar Works Pakistan itself was founded in 2021 and has served 300+ customers, including 50+ industrial clients.
- In-house load analysis, engineering and AutoCAD design.
- Solar, grid, generator, battery and controls designed as one system.
- Installation, testing and safe commissioning by our own teams.
- Detailed BOQ; manufacturer's warranty per product.
- After-sales support by our own engineers, with a 48-hour target to send service personnel after a complaint is registered.

Frequently asked questions
Can a hospital run fully on solar?
Not practically, because hospitals run 24 hours and need reliable backup. Solar supplies daytime energy, a battery bridges outages and evening use, and the grid and generator remain part of the supply.
Do hospitals need a battery with solar?
For resilience, usually yes. A BESS sized for critical and essential loads carries them through outages while the generator starts, and can cover short outages without it.
Will solar replace our generator?
No. The generator remains the backup for long outages. Solar and a battery reduce how often and how long it runs, with a controller to keep it operating safely.
Is solar power safe for medical equipment?
A well-designed system with proper earthing, surge protection and suitable inverters supplies stable power. Each device's requirements are set by its manufacturer and the hospital's biomedical team, and we design circuits to meet the supply needs they specify.
What should a hospital prepare before a site survey?
Twelve months of bills, generator rating and running hours, single-line diagrams if available, and a list of circuits your team considers critical or essential.
Can solar be installed without disrupting the hospital?
Most work is on roofs and in plant rooms. Tie-in work on distribution boards is planned with the hospital and done in short, scheduled windows.
