Solar System Insurance in Pakistan: What It Covers and What to Ask

Short answer

Solar system insurance pays for loss or damage that a manufacturer's warranty does not cover: theft, hail, storms, floods, fire, lightning and power surges. In Pakistan you can get it either as a dedicated solar PV policy or, in some cases, by adding the system to a home or business property policy. A warranty covers product defects; insurance covers accidents and events. Most owners with a sizeable system benefit from having both.

Warranty vs insurance: the gap

EventManufacturer warrantySolar Works service warrantyInsurance (typical)
Panel or inverter fails from a manufacturing defectYes, per product termsNo (manufacturer handles)Usually no
Installation workmanship issue in year oneNoYes, under applicable project termsUsually no
Theft of panels or batteryNoNoYes, if covered and conditions met
Hailstorm cracks panelsNoNoYes, if natural perils covered
Lightning or grid surge damages inverterOften excludedNoYes, if electrical damage covered
FireNoNoYes, if fire covered

Our warranty guide explains product and performance warranties in detail. Solar Works Pakistan's own cover is a 1-year service warranty under the applicable project terms and a 3-year structure warranty; neither is insurance.

Why insurance matters more now

Rooftop systems in Punjab are exposed to more than most owners expect:

What insurance options exist in Pakistan

Dedicated solar PV insurance

At least one Pakistani general insurer, TPL Insurance, advertises a solar PV policy for residential, commercial and industrial systems. Its product page lists cover for theft and burglary, natural disasters such as floods, storms and earthquakes, electrical faults, surges and short circuits, fire, explosion and lightning, and accidental damage. Exclusions, deductibles and premiums are not shown on the page, so ask for the full policy wording before you buy. Other insurers may offer similar cover; ask your existing insurer first.

We mention this as an example of what is on the market, not as a recommendation. Solar Works Pakistan does not sell insurance.

Home or business property policies

General home insurance and home takaful plans in Pakistan commonly cover the building and contents against fire, theft, floods and earthquakes. For example, EFU General's Mehfooz Ghar takaful plan, offered through Faysal Bank, lists structure, contents including electronics and appliances, natural disasters, fire, theft and vandalism. Whether a rooftop solar system counts as part of the building or as contents, and up to what value, depends on the policy. Do not assume it is covered: ask for the solar system to be named in the schedule.

Insurance through bank financing

If you financed your system, insurance may already be part of the deal or required by the bank. Our solar on installments guide notes that some banks make equipment insurance mandatory while others leave it to the customer. For factories, see industrial solar financing. Check who is named on the policy, the period it covers, and whether it renews automatically.

Commercial and industrial projects

Larger plants often need more than a property policy:

See our industrial and commercial solar page for how we approach larger projects.

Ten questions to ask before you buy a policy

  1. Is the solar system named in the schedule, with its full value?
  2. Is cover on replacement cost or depreciated value?
  3. Which perils are included: theft, hail, storm, flood, earthquake, fire, lightning, surge, accidental damage?
  4. Is the battery covered, including fire starting in the battery?
  5. Is the inverter covered for electrical and surge damage?
  6. What is the deductible (excess) per claim?
  7. Are there security conditions for theft, such as locks, a boundary wall or a guard?
  8. Does the policy require installation by a qualified company, or periodic maintenance?
  9. Does it cover the system if you move it to a new house?
  10. How do you report a claim, and how quickly must you report it?

Documents that make a claim easier

Keep these together, on paper and as photos on your phone:

Genuine, traceable equipment with an invoice is far easier to insure and claim for than unbranded or second-hand equipment.

How to make a claim

  1. Make the site safe. Do not touch damaged panels, cables or a battery that is swollen, hot or smoking. Switch off at the isolators only if it is safe to do so, and call for help.
  2. Report the incident to the insurer within the time the policy sets. For theft, file a police report.
  3. Photograph everything before any repair or removal.
  4. Get a technical assessment of what was damaged and what it will cost to replace.
  5. Submit the claim with the documents above.

When a customer reports damage, our own engineering staff can visit; our target is to send service personnel within 48 hours of a registered complaint.

Reducing risk lowers the chance of a claim

Insurance pays after the event. Good engineering reduces the chance of one: correctly designed structures for wind, proper earthing and surge protection, correctly sized DC and AC protection, and batteries placed in a ventilated, shaded spot. Solar Works Pakistan designs structures and electrical protection in-house, and our own teams install them. See our installation services.

Frequently asked questions

Can I insure my solar panels in Pakistan?

Yes. Some insurers sell a dedicated solar PV policy, and some home or business property policies can include the system if it is named in the schedule. Ask for the full policy wording and check which perils are covered.

Does the manufacturer's warranty cover hail or storm damage?

Usually not. Manufacturer warranties cover defects in the product, not weather, accidents or theft. That gap is what insurance is for.

Does home insurance automatically cover rooftop solar?

Not necessarily. Some policies treat it as part of the building, others as contents, and some exclude it or cap its value. Ask your insurer to name the solar system and its value in the policy schedule.

Is solar insurance required if I take a bank loan?

Some banks require the financed equipment to be insured, while others leave it to you. Check your financing agreement and ask who arranges the policy and who pays the premium.

Are batteries covered by solar insurance?

It depends on the policy. Ask specifically whether the battery is covered, including fire that starts in the battery, and on what valuation basis.

What documents do I need for a solar insurance claim?

The invoice and quotation, serial numbers of panels, inverter and battery, installation and damage photos, a police report for theft, and a technical assessment of the damage. Keeping these on file from day one saves time.

Does Solar Works Pakistan sell insurance?

No. We supply and install solar systems and can provide the equipment details your insurer needs. You buy the policy directly from an insurer or through your bank.
