Why does an EV charger stop or slow down on solar backup?

What you will see

• Charging pauses when the grid fails.
• Charging speed falls while other backup loads are running.
• A charger warning appears without a complete inverter shutdown.
• The vehicle resumes charging after operating conditions change.

Why it happens

Victron’s EV-charger guidance illustrates that integration depends on the charger’s connection position and supported control features. Its overload-protection functions can reduce or stop charging under specified conditions; other products need their own documentation.

The installer should review the charger, inverter, battery and backed-up circuit arrangement together. Available energy, permitted power and the configured charging objective are different constraints.

Ask whether EV charging was included in the backup design. A charger intended for grid operation may need a different arrangement or control strategy before backup charging can be supported.

What you can check yourself

• Record the charger, vehicle, inverter and battery models.
• Save the charger and inverter warnings with timestamps.
• Note whether grid power was present.
• List the other substantial loads operating at the time.
• Include the selected charging mode as shown in the normal user interface. Mention any recent vehicle, charger or battery change.

What not to do

• Do not increase charging limits, bypass load management or move the charger onto backup wiring yourself. Do not assume that a larger battery alone increases the inverter’s output capability.
