What the problem means

An AC is the heaviest load in most Punjab homes, and a fixed-speed (non-inverter) AC pulls several times its running power for a moment each time its compressor starts. Our solar for AC guide covers how much power ACs use.

Whether your solar system can run the AC at a given moment depends on three things:

  • Is there a source? Grid, sunlight, battery, or a mix.
  • Is the AC on a circuit the inverter feeds in that moment?
  • Can the inverter and battery supply the starting surge plus everything else running?

When any one of these is missing, the AC stops, refuses to start, or trips the inverter.

Common reasons for an AC not running on solar

Your inverter is on-grid

An on-grid inverter must shut down when the grid fails, by design, to protect line workers. The panels may be in full sun, but nothing in the house runs from them during load-shedding. See anti-islanding and hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid. If you need the AC in load-shedding, you need a hybrid inverter with a backup output and usually a battery.

The AC is not on the backup output

Many hybrid systems split the house into backed-up loads and grid-only loads, so heavy ACs do not drain the battery or overload the inverter in load-shedding. If your AC is on the grid-only side, it will stop whenever the grid goes, by design. Our backup loads panel guide explains how the split is made.

Overload on the compressor start

This is the classic case of ac not starting on solar during load-shedding. The inverter has a continuous rating and a short surge rating. With grid present, many hybrids lean on the grid for the surge; without it, the inverter and battery must supply everything. A non-inverter AC starting while a motor, fridge or iron is running can push the inverter over its limit, so it beeps, cuts the output or shuts down. Inverter ACs start more gently. See inverter AC vs non-inverter AC on solar and inverter overload and beeping.

Battery at cut-off or the wrong mode

After sunset an AC is often the load that pushes the battery to its low-voltage cut-off. Some settings also stop battery use below a chosen percentage, or switch loads back to grid. Read battery low voltage alarm and SBU, SUB and utility-first modes. If the inverter sits in bypass all day, see inverter bypass mode.

Not enough sun, and no battery or grid

On an off-grid or battery-less backup setup, cloud, dust, early morning or late afternoon can leave too little solar power for a compressor. The AC may start, stall and stop.

Inverter AC tripping on solar: the AC's own protection

Most inverter ACs check their supply voltage and stop with an error code if it is too low or too high. If grid voltage is poor and the solar inverter is passing it straight through, the AC may stop although the solar system is fine. Many ACs also have a built-in delay after power returns so the compressor does not restart against high refrigerant pressure; restarting too soon makes the start harder. A stabilizer in the wrong place can add its own delay and confuse things; see stabilizer with solar inverter.

Breaker or wiring problems

A breaker too small for the AC's starting current, a loose terminal, or an RCCB detecting leakage in the AC can all stop it. See solar breaker tripping. Never fit a bigger breaker to "solve" it.

Safe owner checks, step by step

  1. Note the pattern. Only in load-shedding? Only at night? Only when something else is running? Also on grid?
  2. Read the inverter screen or app at the moment it fails: load percentage, battery level, grid status, any alarm. Photograph it.
  3. Read the AC's display or remote for an error code, and look it up in the AC manual.
  4. Start the AC alone. Switch off motors, irons, kettles and other ACs, wait three to five minutes, then start one AC.
  5. Check other rooms. If nothing else in the house has power in load-shedding, the problem is the system type or wiring, not the AC.
  6. Check the breakers and note any that tripped. Reset once only.
  7. Send your notes, photos and inverter model to your installer.

Do not open the inverter, the battery or the AC's electrical box.

What an engineer will check

  • System type and wiring: whether the AC circuit is on the backup output and how the DB is split.
  • Inverter ratings against the AC's running and starting current, plus everything else on backup.
  • Battery health and settings: cut-off voltage, discharge current limit and the communication link with the inverter.
  • Supply voltage under load at the AC, including cable size and connections from the inverter to the AC.
  • The AC itself: capacitor, compressor and fan health. A weak start capacitor makes every start harder on the inverter.
  • Inverter mode settings such as AC input range, battery priority and grid charging.

Fixes range from changing a setting, to moving the AC to a different circuit, to replacing a weak capacitor, to adding inverter or battery capacity. If you need a larger inverter, our inverter price guide compares the options.

How to prevent it

  • Choose inverter ACs for solar homes wherever you can.
  • Size the inverter for the ACs you want in backup, not just the average load.
  • Start ACs one at a time after load-shedding ends or begins.
  • Keep heavy ACs on grid-only circuits if your battery is small, and run them in sunny hours.

How Solar Works Pakistan handles AC complaints

For systems we install, WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 with a photo of the inverter screen or app when the AC fails, the AC's error code if any, and the inverter model. Our own engineering staff handle the complaint, and we target sending service personnel within 48 hours of a registered complaint to begin diagnosis. Our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms; faults in the AC itself are for the AC's service provider. See how after-sales service works.

We can also check why ACs will not run on systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my AC not working on inverter during load-shedding?

If your inverter is on-grid, it shuts down when the grid fails. If it is hybrid, the AC may be on a grid-only circuit, or the inverter may be overloading when the compressor starts. Check whether other rooms still have power.

Why does my AC not start on solar but runs on WAPDA?

The grid can supply the compressor's starting surge easily; an inverter and battery on their own may not, especially with other loads running. Try starting the AC alone, and ask your installer to check the surge rating.

Why is my inverter AC tripping on solar?

Either the solar inverter is overloading, or the AC's own voltage protection is stopping it. Check the inverter screen for overload and the AC display for an error code to tell which.

Should my AC be on the inverter's backup output?

Only if the inverter and battery are sized for it. One inverter AC on backup is common in a well-sized home system; several ACs, or non-inverter units, are usually better on grid-only circuits so they do not overload the inverter or empty the battery.

Why does my AC stop at night on solar?

The battery may have reached its cut-off, or the inverter mode may switch loads to grid or stop battery use below a set level. Check the battery percentage and mode settings.

Is AC not starting on solar bad for the inverter?

Occasional overload trips are what the protection is for, but repeated ones stress the inverter and battery. Fix the cause rather than restarting again and again.
