What if my solar installation has no earthing test records?

What you will see

• A handover file with equipment invoices but no electrical test results.
• An earthing value written down without a date or test method.
• Uncertainty about whether later extensions were included in testing.
• Conflicting claims based on different types of measurement.

Why it happens

Protective-conductor continuity, earth resistance and residual-current-device testing address different aspects of an installation. Professional installation testers provide separate functions for such checks; one recorded result should not be presented as proof that every protective measure has been verified.

The measurement method also matters. For example, clamp-based ground-loop measurements depend on the available return paths and are not suitable for every electrode arrangement. Results need interpretation in the context of the installation.

Ask the attending professional to identify the required checks and explain the acceptance basis. There is no single resistance number that this general article can prescribe for every property and earthing arrangement.

What you can check yourself

• Search the handover folder and previous service reports.
• Look for the installation address, test date and person responsible.
• Check whether the report identifies test points, methods and results.
• Note extensions or equipment changes made after that date.
• Ask for unclear abbreviations and conclusions to be explained.
• A report should describe the work actually performed. If an earlier test cannot be verified, a new inspection should be recorded with its real date and scope.

What not to do

• Do not perform improvised earth tests, disconnect conductors or add neutral-earth links. Do not ask anyone to create a backdated report or copy a passing value from another property.

When to call us

• Request an assessment when records cannot be recovered or major changes have occurred. Electric tingles, shocks or damaged protective wiring require urgent attention regardless of what an old report says.
