What you will see
- Year-on-year totals falling faster than expected.
- The loss often concentrated in certain strings.
- In some cases, darker cells along the edges of panels.
Why it happens
In a long string, the panels furthest from earth sit at a high voltage relative to their frames. Over time, especially in heat and humidity, this drives a small leakage that reduces the cells’ output. Older panel types are more prone to it, and good grounding and PID-resistant panels reduce the risk.
Caught early, PID can often be partly reversed with equipment that counteracts the voltage overnight.
What you can check yourself
- Compare the same month across two or three years in the app.
- Note which strings, if any, are lower.
What not to do
- Do not assume a steady decline is normal without checking.
- Do not fit PID devices yourself.
