What should I do if rodents have damaged solar wiring?

Chewed cable coverings, nesting material near equipment or a fault that keeps returning can justify checking for animal damage. However, an inverter alarm alone cannot tell you whether a rodent is responsible. The affected area needs inspection before anyone decides what should be replaced. For a home, shop or factory, the useful first step is to keep people away from suspected damaged wiring and record what was noticed. There is no need to move a cable or uncover a nest to prove the problem.

Why it happens

Animal chewing is a recognised PV maintenance issue. A lasting response should address damaged insulation or wiring and the route through which animals reach it. Repairing the electrical damage without addressing access can leave the same problem exposed to recurrence.

An installer should identify the actual extent of damage rather than replacing only the most visible covering. Where pest control is needed, the pest-control provider and solar team should coordinate so that the proposed treatment does not create another problem around electrical equipment.

What you can check yourself

Note the location from a safe, accessible position.

Mention whether the same area has been repaired before.
Keep stored materials away from equipment access routes without approaching damaged wiring.
If the suspected damage is under panels or inside an enclosure, leave that inspection to the attending team.

What not to do

Do not handle chewed cables, open equipment or wrap the damage with tape. Do not spray liquids or apply pest-control chemicals inside electrical equipment. Avoid placing improvised barriers against cables or blocking equipment ventilation.
