Why is the battery charging from the grid on a sunny day?

What you will see

• Grid import and battery charging appear at the same time.
• Charging begins at a similar time each day.
• The system imports electricity after a long outage, despite sunshine.
• The battery reaches its backup reserve before the solar-only charging period would normally finish.

Why it happens

Some systems allow scheduled grid charging or use grid power to maintain a reserve for outages. On supported models, a low-charge recovery function can also initiate grid charging to protect against further discharge.

Sunshine does not establish that there is enough spare solar power to meet every demand. Appliances may be consuming much of the available generation. Also, grid import on its own does not prove the battery is receiving grid energy; some or all of that import may be supplying the property’s loads.

These possibilities make it useful to review the complete power-flow record and the active operating mode before concluding that the system is behaving incorrectly.

What you can check yourself

• Photograph solar generation, load, battery charging and grid import together.
• Note whether this happens at a fixed time or after the battery runs low.
• Check your handover notes for the agreed charging arrangement.
• Record any recent change to schedules, tariffs, working hours or backup needs.
• Tell us whether your priority is preserving backup availability or minimising grid charging.

What not to do

• Do not switch off protective recovery functions or copy charging settings from another installation.
• A change that reduces grid use may also reduce the reserve available for an unexpected outage.

When to call us

• Request a review if charging no longer matches the agreed plan, import has increased unexpectedly, or the system repeatedly charges from the grid without an understood reason.
• Solar-only charging and grid-assisted charging should be assessed against your solar availability and required backup. There is no single arrangement that suits every home or business.
