Why it happens
Cracks in solar cells can have different electrical consequences, depending on their position and whether parts of the cell become electrically isolated. Specialist methods, including electroluminescence imaging and electrical performance tests, can help assess defects that an ordinary photograph cannot resolve.
Module handling requirements are therefore important. LONGi’s installation guidance prohibits standing or walking on modules. A solar array must not be used as a route across the roof or a work platform.
The assessment should consider the available event history, inspection findings and performance evidence together. Even when damage is confirmed, establishing when it occurred may require earlier records; a later image alone may not answer that question.
Evidence that fits together
Cracks vary in effect. Even confirmed damage does not by itself establish its cause.
What you can check yourself
- Record the date and description of any known impact or handling event.
- Preserve existing photographs, contractor notes or inspection reports.
- Save production records from before and after the event.
- Gather the module model, serial list and array layout.
- Note warnings or other changes that began at the same time.
- Use existing identification records rather than climbing onto the roof to read labels.
What not to do
- Do not press, flex or tap a panel to test it. Do not stand on modules to inspect neighbouring panels. Avoid treating a phone photograph as proof that microscopic cell damage is absent.
When to call us
- Request an assessment after a known impact or improper handling, or when a persistent performance change follows roof work. Broken glass or exposed electrical parts require a clear area and prompt professional attention.
