What you will see

  • Lower output after an additional string was connected.
  • New voltage or input-related warnings.
  • A changed pattern on one MPPT or input channel.
  • The expected new panel capacity appearing in paperwork but not in monitoring.
  • An MPPT is the inverter function that controls how power is drawn from connected panels. The acceptable arrangement depends on the exact equipment.

Why it happens

String configuration, differences between connected modules and shading can affect how an inverter operates. Panels should be assessed as part of the electrical arrangement, rather than selected only by their wattage or brand.

An expansion also requires the string voltage to remain within the inverter’s limits across the design conditions. Cold-weather open-circuit voltage is relevant even if the work was completed on a warm day.

Other possibilities include an installation fault, an incomplete configuration change or an unrelated operating restriction. The team should check the commissioning evidence instead of assuming that the new panels themselves are defective.

Ask for an updated panel layout, string schedule and record of the checks performed after the change. These make the expansion easier to verify and maintain.

Matching wattage alone is not proof of compatibility. Applies to LONGi, Jinko panels on Solis, GoodWe, Growatt or Huawei inverters.

What you can check yourself

  • Gather the old and new panel models and quantities.
  • Save production curves from comparable periods.
  • Record the exact date the new panels were connected.
  • Capture input readings and any new warnings.
  • Identify any other change made during the same visit.
  • Use supplied drawings and paperwork; do not climb onto the roof to count labels or trace connections.

What not to do

  • Do not rearrange strings, swap connectors or increase inverter limits. Do not accept matching wattage as sufficient proof of compatibility. Avoid adding further panels before the present change has been assessed.

When to call us

  • Request a review when an expansion introduces persistent loss of production, new alarms or an unexplained change in input behaviour.
