Why does one PV string or inverter input show zero?

What you will see

• One input showing zero while another is generating.
• An input that has always been blank since commissioning.
• A sudden change after roof work, maintenance or bad weather.
• Different readings on the inverter screen and monitoring app.
• Check timestamps before comparing the app with the equipment display. An old uploaded reading cannot establish the input’s present condition.

Why it happens

A low-production investigation can include the actual string arrangement, operating conditions, connection integrity and related alarms. Manufacturer troubleshooting guidance assigns electrical input checks to the diagnostic process; these are not instructions for customers to unplug or test PV wiring.

The installer should confirm whether the displayed channel represents a connected input and compare the readings with the system’s documented arrangement. Low available sunlight or a system that is not currently drawing solar power also needs context before a wiring failure is diagnosed.

If a previously productive input remains at zero during otherwise normal generation, the change merits inspection. Remote data may narrow the problem, but it cannot confirm the condition of every cable, protective device or connection.

What you can check yourself

• Save the complete input page with its timestamp.
• Note which values are zero and whether the other inputs are active.
• Check earlier screenshots or the handover record for comparison.
• Record the weather, operating mode and any alarm.
• Mention recent maintenance, roof work or equipment changes.
• There is no need to follow a cable physically to identify the string. Use drawings or labels that are already safely visible.

What not to do

• Do not unplug connectors, open DC protection boxes or probe PV terminals with a meter. Do not swap inputs to see whether the problem moves. Do not assume a zero display means the associated wiring is safe to touch.

When to call us

• Report a connected input that unexpectedly stays at zero, especially when the other inputs continue producing or an alarm appears.
