Inverter Isolation Fault (Riso / Earth Fault) Explained

Short answer

An inverter isolation fault means the inverter has measured too little insulation resistance (Riso) between the solar panels' DC wiring and earth. In plain terms, some current could leak to the frame, the structure or the ground. The inverter refuses to start, or raises an alarm, until the resistance is safe again. If the fault clears by mid-morning on damp days, moisture is the likely trigger; if it stays, there is probably damaged cable, a wet connector or a faulty panel, and a technician must find it.

Our general inverter faults guide covers all alarm types. This guide goes deeper into this one, because it is both common in Punjab and a real safety warning.

What insulation resistance means

Your panels produce DC at several hundred volts. That DC should stay inside the cables, connectors and panels, insulated from everything else. The metal frames and structure are bonded to earth.

Every morning before it connects, a typical grid-tied or hybrid inverter measures the resistance between the DC conductors and earth. High resistance means good insulation. If the measured value is below the inverter's safety threshold, it shows an alarm. Different brands call it different things:

Huawei, for example, lists "Low Insulation Resistance" as a major alarm and names two causes: a short circuit between the PV array and ground, or a damp array whose insulation to ground has weakened.

Why it often appears on damp mornings

Many owners see this alarm only in a particular pattern: on winter mornings, after fog, after rain in the monsoon, or after the panels have been washed. The system starts late, then works normally by 10 or 11 AM.

This happens because water and dew lower insulation resistance at any weak spot. As the sun dries the array, the resistance rises above the threshold and the inverter connects.

This pattern is a clue, not a reason to ignore it. A healthy array stays well above the threshold even when damp. If the alarm keeps appearing on damp mornings, there is a weak point somewhere that water is reaching. It is likely to get worse over time.

Common causes

CauseTypical sign
Cable insulation scraped against the structure edge or roof parapetFault appears with moisture, worse after storms
Cable chewed by rats or pecked by birdsFault starts suddenly, often in a spot under panels where pigeons nest
Water inside an MC4 connector that was not fully crimped or sealedFault after rain or panel washing
Mixed or poor-quality connectors that do not seal properlyFault after rain, connector may show heat marks
Damaged panel back sheet or cracked glassFault may follow one string; visible damage on inspection
Junction box seal failed on a panelFault in humid weather, sometimes with corrosion inside
Cable lying in a puddle or on a wet roof surface without a conduitFault after rain or tank overflow
DC cable run through a damaged conduit in a wallFault in monsoon, hard to see from outside
Battery-side fault (some hybrid systems)Some inverters also check the battery circuit to earth

Several of these have their own guides: solar cable sizing and quality, MC4 connectors and earthing, bypass diodes and junction boxes, hot spots and cracked panels, and pigeons and birds under solar panels.

Why owners must not open DC wiring

This is the important part. An isolation fault means the DC side may already have a leakage path to earth. DC from panels:

Turning off the inverter or the AC breaker does not make the roof cables safe. So:

Our earthing and surge protection guide explains why the earthing and DC protection must be right, and our fire safety guide covers what to do if you see smoke or burning.

Safe owner checks

These checks use only your eyes, the inverter screen and the app:

  1. Write down the alarm exactly as shown, with the date and time.
  2. Note the pattern. Only on damp mornings? After rain or washing? All day, every day?
  3. Look at the generation graph. Does the system start late and then run normally, or not at all?
  4. Check which string is affected, if the app shows string-level data.
  5. Look at the roof from a safe position, without touching anything. Note visible damage: a cable hanging loose, a chewed section, a connector lying in water, a cracked panel, a nest under the array.
  6. Think back. Was there recent work on the roof, a storm, new water tanks, cable TV wiring, or panel washing with a pressure jet?
  7. Send photos and notes to your installer.

If the panels are washed regularly, ask whoever cleans them to use low-pressure water and not spray directly into connectors or junction boxes. See how often to clean solar panels.

What a technician does

A technician will usually:

  1. Isolate the array safely and work string by string.
  2. Measure insulation resistance of each string with a proper insulation tester, at the test voltage the equipment calls for.
  3. Narrow the fault down to one string, then one section, then one panel, cable or connector.
  4. Replace the damaged item: re-terminating a connector with matched parts and the correct crimping tool, replacing a cable run, or replacing a panel under warranty if the panel is at fault.
  5. Re-test, restore the system, and check that the alarm does not return on the next damp morning.

Finding an intermittent fault can take more than one visit, because it may only show when the array is wet. Insulation testing is also part of proper commissioning; see how we test and commission a solar system.

How Solar Works Pakistan handles isolation faults

For systems we install, our own engineering and technical staff handle the complaint. We target sending service personnel within 48 hours of a registered complaint to begin diagnosis; final repair time depends on the fault, the weather needed to reproduce it, and any parts or manufacturer involvement. Our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms. Panel or inverter defects go through the manufacturer's warranty per product. See how after-sales service works.

We can also test and diagnose isolation faults on systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.

Frequently asked questions

What is an isolation fault on a solar inverter?

It means the inverter measured low insulation resistance between the DC solar wiring and earth. There may be a leakage path through damaged cable, a wet connector or a faulty panel, so the inverter will not connect until it is safe.

Why does my inverter show an isolation fault only in the morning?

Dew, fog or rain lowers insulation at a weak spot. As the sun dries the array, resistance rises and the inverter starts. A healthy array should not do this, so the weak spot should be found.

Is an isolation fault dangerous?

It can be. It means the DC insulation is not as good as it should be, which can lead to shock risk or arcing. Do not touch the roof wiring; call a technician.

Can I lower the insulation resistance setting to stop the alarm?

No. The threshold protects people and equipment. Changing it hides the fault without fixing it. Only a qualified technician should change protection settings, and only after testing.

What is Riso on an inverter?

Riso is the insulation resistance between the PV conductors and earth. The inverter measures it before connecting each day and raises an alarm if it is below its safety limit.

Can washing the panels cause an isolation fault?

Water reaching a poorly sealed connector or damaged cable can trigger it. A properly installed array should tolerate gentle washing; repeated faults after washing point to a weak spot.

Does the warranty cover an isolation fault?

It depends on the cause. A panel defect may be a manufacturer's warranty matter; damage from rats, storms or roof work usually is not. Your installer can tell you after finding the fault.
