Night Solar Panels: Do Solar Panels Work at Night, in Fog and in Lahore Smog?
Short answer
No. Solar panels do not produce electricity at night, and there is no "night solar panel" on the market that does. Panels need light; when the sun sets, output falls to zero. They do keep working in fog, cloud and smog, but at reduced output. To run loads at night you need either the grid or a battery charged during the day.
Do solar panels work at night?
A solar panel (solar plate) turns light into electricity. No light, no power. Moonlight is far too weak to matter, and street lights or porch lights are weaker still.
Most of a panel's output in Punjab comes in the middle hours of the day. Output starts low after sunrise, peaks around midday, and fades in the late afternoon. After sunset it is zero until the next morning.
What about "night solar panels" for sale?
You may see adverts for "night solar panels" or a "night solar panel price in Pakistan". Usually one of three things is going on:
- A normal panel sold with a battery. The panel charges the battery in the day; the battery runs your load at night. That is a real and sensible system, but the night power is coming from the battery, not the panel.
- Misleading marketing. Some sellers claim their panels "work in low light, even at night". Good panels do perform reasonably in weak daylight, but not in darkness.
- Research devices. Researchers at Stanford built an experimental cell that produces a tiny amount of power at night using the temperature difference between the panel and the air. It produced around 50 milliwatts per square metre, a very small fraction of what a normal panel makes in daylight, and it is a research device, not a product (AIP Publishing).
If someone offers you a panel that powers your home at night without a battery or grid, treat it as a red flag.

- NIGHTZero output; battery or grid runs the house
- FOG MORNINGVery low output

How to get solar power at night
You have three practical options:
| Option | How night loads are run | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| On-grid system | From the grid; daytime solar reduces the bill | Homes and businesses where the grid is reasonably reliable |
| Hybrid system with battery | From a battery charged by solar in the day, then the grid | Homes and businesses that need backup during load-shedding or at night |
| Off-grid system | From the battery only | Sites with no grid connection |
The battery has to be sized for your night load. As an illustration only: if you want to run 1,000 W of fans and lights for 8 hours, that is 8 kWh of energy, before allowing for usable depth of discharge and inverter losses. Our battery size guide walks through the arithmetic, and our lithium battery price page covers the options. For the trade-offs between system types, see hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid.
Under current net-metering and net-billing rules, how much of your solar you use yourself versus export can affect the value of a battery. See our net metering and net billing guide.
Do solar panels work in fog?
Yes, but less. Fog and thick cloud scatter and block sunlight, so less light reaches the panel. On a dense foggy morning in central Punjab, output can stay very low until the fog lifts, and on days when fog lingers all day, the whole day's production is much lower than on a clear day.
Panels still produce some power from diffuse light, which is why output rarely drops to absolute zero in daytime. Two practical points:
- Fog plus dew leaves a film. Moisture settles dust onto the glass. After a foggy spell, panels often need cleaning. See how often to clean solar panels.
- Cold helps a little. Panels are slightly more efficient when cool. On a clear winter day, that partly offsets the lower sun angle.
Do solar panels work in Lahore smog?
Yes, but smog reduces output in two ways.
1. Haze in the air. Smog particles absorb and scatter sunlight before it reaches your roof. Research by MIT and partners found that haze in Delhi cut solar output by about 12% on an annual average, with other polluted cities showing smaller but still meaningful losses (MIT News). Lahore was not in that study, but its winter smog is of the same kind, so expect a noticeable dip during heavy smog weeks.
2. Grime on the panels. Smog leaves a sticky, oily layer of soot and dust on glass that rain alone may not remove. This soiling loss is separate from the haze loss and is the part you can control, by cleaning the panels safely.
What helps in smog season:
- Clean panels more often in November and December, using water and a soft brush, never harsh chemicals or high-pressure jets.
- Check your monitoring app; a drop that does not recover after cleaning may point to a fault, not smog.
- Size your system for the whole year, not just for clear summer days.

Best months for solar production in Punjab
Output changes through the year. In broad terms for Punjab:
| Season | Typical conditions | Effect on output |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to April) | Clear skies, moderate heat, long days | Usually strong |
| Early summer (May to June) | Longest days, intense sun, very hot panels, dust storms | High, but heat and dust reduce efficiency |
| Monsoon (July to September) | Cloudy and rainy spells; rain helps clean panels | Variable day to day |
| Autumn (October to November) | Clear spells, then smog builds | Good early, falling with smog |
| Winter (December to January) | Short days, low sun, fog and smog | Usually lowest |
Spring and early summer tend to be the best months for solar production in Punjab; December and January tend to be the weakest. Exact output depends on your location, tilt, direction, shading, cleaning and equipment. Use our solar calculator for an estimate, and treat any figure as an estimate, not a promise.

Frequently asked questions
Can solar panels work at night?
No. Solar panels need light to produce electricity, so output is zero after sunset. Night loads run from the grid or from a battery charged by the panels during the day.
What is a night solar panel?
There is no commercial panel that powers a home at night. "Night solar panel" usually means a normal panel sold with a battery, or misleading marketing. Experimental night-time cells exist in research labs but produce only tiny amounts of power.
What is the night solar panels price in Pakistan?
Because no true night panels are sold, there is no real price for them. What you actually need is a solar system with a battery; see our lithium battery price page and WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 for today's rate.
Do solar panels work in fog?
Yes, but output is much lower in dense fog because less light reaches the panels. They usually recover quickly once the fog lifts. Fog and dew can also leave dirt on the glass, so cleaning helps.
How much does Lahore smog reduce solar output?
There is no single figure for every roof. Smog reduces sunlight reaching the panels and leaves grime on the glass. Research in Delhi found haze cut output by about 12% on an annual average; cleaning panels during smog season removes the part caused by grime.
Which are the best months for solar production in Punjab?
Spring and early summer usually give the highest output, thanks to clear skies and long days. December and January usually give the lowest, due to short days, low sun, fog and smog.
Do I need a battery if I have solar?
Only if you want power at night or during load-shedding. An on-grid system without a battery shuts down when the grid fails, for safety. A hybrid system with a battery can keep essential loads running.
