What you will see

  • One panel or string underperforming.

Why it happens

Poor sealing lets in moisture and dust, which corrode the contacts. Heat cycling can loosen solder joints, and a failed bypass diode stops the panel handling shade properly. Most junction box problems are manufacturing faults covered by the panel warranty.

What you can check yourself

  • Only if it can be seen safely from below or a ladder, look for discolouration or a lid that has come away.
  • Note whether the problem panel also gets partial shade.

What not to do

  • Do not open, reseal or glue a junction box.
  • Do not pull on panel cables.
