What you will see
- A base plate apparently resting on tiles or a screed layer.
- Cracked finishes around a support.
- No drawing showing the slab and anchor arrangement.
- Uncertainty about what material the anchors actually engage.
- The visible surface alone cannot establish anchor embedment or the suitability of the structure underneath.
Why it happens
Anchor design must account for the forces on the connection and the condition of its base material. Hilti identifies factors including concrete condition, anchor spacing, edge distance and environmental exposure. These require assessment for the actual support arrangement.
Anchoring into structural concrete and preparing the material beneath a base plate are related but separate design questions. A designed grout layer beneath a plate can be evaluated as part of an engineered arrangement; direct steel-to-concrete contact is not the only possible detail.
The engineer should establish the load path, slab suitability and appropriate fixing arrangement. Roof penetrations and waterproofing must be coordinated with that design.
What the anchor actually holds
The surface cannot show anchor embedment. Waterproofing must be coordinated with the fixing.
What you can check yourself
- Ask for the approved support and anchor detail.
- Gather construction photographs showing the roof layers before fixing.
- Note any visible cracking, displacement or water entry from a safe location.
- Ask how the structural slab was identified and assessed.
- Check whether the final installation record reflects the work performed.
- Where the concealed condition is uncertain, the attending professionals should decide how it can be verified safely.
What not to do
- Do not shake supports, tighten anchors yourself or drill deeper holes as an experiment. Do not use a generic bolt length or a surface photograph as proof of adequate anchorage. Avoid removing tiles around an installed support without an agreed assessment and repair plan.
When to call us
- Request review when anchorage into the structural slab cannot be established, finishes around supports are failing or the structure appears to have moved.
