Why does the system export electricity before charging the battery?

What you will see

• Export continues while the battery percentage stays unchanged.
• The battery charges, but some solar power is exported at the same time.
• Export increases as the battery approaches full.
• A brief export reading appears after an appliance switches off.

Why it happens

An export-priority mode can direct surplus solar to the grid, while charging schedules determine when the battery is allowed to charge. A system set for that behaviour will not necessarily charge the battery first.

Battery charging also has a power limit. If spare solar generation exceeds what the battery is currently permitted to accept, remaining power can be exported where export is enabled. The installer should check the active charging limit and battery status even when the displayed percentage is low.

Monitoring can capture temporary imbalances while the inverter responds to a load change. Manufacturer guidance describes cases where a snapshot shows export during that response. That explanation should not be used to dismiss sustained, unexplained export over an extended period.

What you can check yourself

• Capture solar generation, property demand, battery charging and export at matching timestamps.
• Check whether the event is brief or continues through the charging period.
• Note the battery percentage and any temperature or communication warning.
• Review your handover notes for the agreed charging and export priorities.
• Tell us whether the issue began after settings, equipment or monitoring changes.

What not to do

• Do not reverse meter sensors, alter wiring, force higher battery charging or disable approved export controls.
• Measurement and configuration checks belong with the installer.

When to call us

• Arrange a review if the agreed plan prioritises charging but sustained export continues while the battery remains below its intended level. Also report inconsistent readings or behaviour that changed after commissioning or service.
• The review should establish the operating mode, battery acceptance limits and measurement accuracy before changing the energy priorities.
