What you will see

  • Instantaneous power below the combined panel rating.
  • Different peak output on two apparently sunny days.
  • A lower afternoon peak despite hot, bright weather.
  • A comparison with a neighbour’s system that has a different layout.
  • Check whether the figure being compared is power at that moment or energy accumulated over a period. Kilowatts and kilowatt-hours answer different questions.

Why it happens

Module ratings use standard test conditions. Actual output depends on conditions such as sunlight reaching the cells and cell temperature. Orientation, tilt and shading also affect the installed array’s performance. Hot weather alone does not imply maximum power.

The measurement point matters too. A panel’s DC rating and the inverter’s AC output are different quantities. The inverter may reach its own output limit before all available DC power can be converted, a condition called clipping.

Performance should therefore be assessed against the particular system, including its operating limits and any active power control. There is no fixed percentage below nameplate that this article can label normal for every installation.

Measured at standard test conditions.

On your roof

Heat, dust, direction and inverter limits reduce it.

Compare power at a moment with power at a moment, and energy over a day with energy over a day.

Illustration only. Applies to LONGi, Jinko and other panels.

What you can check yourself

  • Confirm the installed panel count and model from your paperwork.
  • Check the screenshot’s unit, timestamp and measurement label.
  • Save several complete daily production curves.
  • Note cloud, obvious shading and recent changes around the property.
  • Compare similar days before and after a reported change where possible.
  • A sustained change in a previously consistent pattern is more useful to report than a single brief reading.

What not to do

  • Do not conclude that panels are counterfeit or defective solely from one low power reading. Do not climb onto the roof to clean or inspect them without suitable access arrangements. Do not change inverter limits to chase the array’s nameplate figure.

When to call us

  • Request a performance review for a persistent unexplained decline, repeated warnings or a substantial change after installation work.
