Inverter Showing Overload or Beeping: What It Means
Short answer
An inverter overload alarm means the appliances connected to it are asking for more power than it can supply, usually in backup mode when there is no grid to share the load. Beeping is the inverter's warning sound: it can mean overload, but also low battery, grid loss or another fault. Read the screen first, switch off heavy loads such as ACs, motors, irons and kettles, and let the inverter recover. If it overloads with normal loads, or keeps beeping with no clear reason, call service.
Safety first
Overload protection is there to prevent damage and fire. Do not try to defeat it.
- Do not open the inverter, bypass breakers or change wiring.
- Do not keep resetting an inverter that overloads again straight away.
- If you smell burning, see smoke or the inverter is very hot to the touch, switch off at the breakers your installer showed you, keep clear and call for help.

Why does my inverter beep?
Beeps are a general warning. The screen or app tells you which one. Common reasons:
| What the screen shows | What it means | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Overload, OL, load over 100% | Too much load on the inverter output | Switch off heavy appliances |
| Low battery, battery under-voltage | Battery is near its cut-off level | Reduce load; wait for solar or grid |
| Grid lost, utility fail, line fail | Grid supply has gone or is out of range | Normal during load-shedding |
| Over-temperature | Inverter is too hot and may derate | Check ventilation and shade |
| Battery or BMS communication | Battery and inverter not talking | Call service |
| Fault or error code | A protection has operated | Note the code; check the manual |
Some inverters beep briefly every time the grid goes, which is normal. Many let you mute routine beeps in the settings, but the alarm itself should still be investigated. Our solar inverter faults guide explains the common codes in plain language.
What overload actually means
Every inverter has a continuous power rating (for example 6 kW or 10 kW) and can usually handle a short surge above that for a moment. If load stays above the rating, or a surge is too large, the inverter warns, then shuts its output off to protect itself.
Overload is most common in backup mode, during load-shedding. When the grid is present, many hybrid inverters can pass grid power through to the loads, so a large load may be fed partly from the grid. When the grid goes, the inverter must carry everything on its own from solar and battery. The same set of appliances that ran fine a minute earlier can suddenly be too much.
The battery can also be a limit. A battery that can only discharge at a certain rate may not support a big load even if the inverter could. Our guide to a solar battery not charging or draining too fast covers battery-side limits.
The usual culprits in Pakistani homes
Air conditioners
An AC compressor draws a surge when it starts, especially a non-inverter AC. Two or three ACs starting together after load-shedding ends, or when the inverter switches over, is a classic cause of overload. Inverter ACs start more gently. See inverter AC vs non-inverter AC on solar and our solar for AC guide.
Water motors and pressure pumps
A water motor can draw several times its running current for a moment at start-up. Motors, pressure boosters and home lifts are common triggers. See running a home water pump on solar and solar for home lifts, water boosters and gate motors.
Heating appliances
Irons, kettles, electric heaters, room heaters, hair dryers and microwaves draw high power while they run. One on its own may be fine; two or three together on backup may not.
Everything coming on at once
When the grid returns, or the inverter transfers between modes, every appliance that was on can start at the same moment. This combined surge can trip an inverter that handles each load individually without trouble. Our guide to how fast hybrid inverters switch over during load-shedding explains transfer behaviour.
Safe steps for owners
- Read the screen or app. Confirm it says overload and not another fault.
- Switch off heavy loads. ACs, motors, irons, kettles, heaters and microwaves first.
- Let the inverter recover. Many inverters restart output automatically after an overload once load falls; some need a reset by the manual's sequence. Follow your manual exactly, and only reset once.
- Bring loads back one by one. Wait a minute or two between large appliances, especially ACs and motors.
- Watch the load percentage. Most apps and screens show load as a percentage or in kW. Keep it comfortably below 100% on backup.
- Note the pattern. Does it happen only during load-shedding, only when a particular appliance starts, or at random?
If the inverter overloads with only light loads on, the problem is not your appliances. It could be a wiring fault, a failing appliance with a short, or an inverter fault. Call service.
Longer-term fixes
If overload is a regular event, your engineer can look at:
- Load management. Run heavy loads in solar hours and avoid starting them together. Our solar load management guide has practical ideas.
- Separating essential and heavy loads. Some heavy loads, such as an extra AC or a large motor, can be wired to run from the grid only, so they drop off during load-shedding instead of overloading the backup output. This is a design change for your installer.
- Switching to inverter ACs where non-inverter units are the problem.
- Adding inverter capacity. A larger inverter, or a second one in parallel, can share the load. See running two inverters in parallel and adding batteries or more panels to an existing system.
- Checking heat. A hot inverter can reduce its rating. See inverter overheating in summer.
If you need a bigger inverter, our solar inverter price guide compares hybrid and on-grid options from the brands we supply.
Example arithmetic: how a load adds up
Using round illustrative numbers only: suppose a 6 kW hybrid inverter is running fans, lights and a fridge at about 1 kW on backup. A 1.5 ton non-inverter AC adds, say, about 2 kW running, with a brief start-up surge well above that. A water motor adds, for example, about 1 kW running, again with a start-up surge. On their own these may fit. Start the AC and motor together while an iron is on, and the momentary demand can exceed what the inverter can supply. The figures are examples, not ratings for any specific appliance or inverter; check the nameplates and your inverter's datasheet.
How Solar Works handles overload complaints
For systems we install, our own engineering and technical staff handle after-sales complaints. Once a complaint is registered, we target sending service personnel within 48 hours to begin diagnosis; the time to fix depends on the fault. We review the load list, settings and wiring, and suggest changes only where they are needed. Our 1-year service warranty applies under the applicable project terms. Inverter defects go through the manufacturer's warranty.
We can also inspect and diagnose systems installed by other companies, as a chargeable service, across Punjab.

Frequently asked questions
What does overload mean on a solar inverter?
It means the connected appliances need more power than the inverter can supply, either continuously or during a start-up surge. The inverter warns, then cuts its output to protect itself.
Why does my inverter overload only during load-shedding?
With the grid present, many hybrid inverters can pass grid power to the loads. During load-shedding, the inverter must carry everything from solar and battery alone, so the same loads can exceed its rating.
Why is my inverter beeping continuously?
Continuous beeping is an active warning. It may be overload, low battery, over-temperature or a fault. Read the screen or app, switch off heavy loads, and call service if the cause is unclear.
Can I run an AC on my hybrid inverter during load-shedding?
Often yes, if the inverter and battery are sized for it and the AC is not started together with other heavy loads. Inverter ACs are gentler on start-up. Your engineer can confirm what your system can carry.
Will repeated overloads damage my inverter?
Overload protection exists to prevent damage, but repeated overloads stress components and point to a system that does not match your loads. Fix the cause rather than resetting every day.
Can I mute the inverter beeping?
Many inverters allow routine beeps to be muted in the settings. Only do so once you understand the alarm, and never ignore an overload, temperature or battery alarm.
