Inverter Overheating in Summer: Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Short answer
When a solar inverter gets too hot, it protects itself by reducing its output (called derating) and, if the heat keeps rising, by shutting down until it cools. In a Punjab summer, inverter overheating is usually caused by direct sun on the inverter, a closed or poorly ventilated room, blocked vents or a dusty heat sink, a failing fan, or an inverter working near its limit for hours. Most of these are installation problems, so the lasting fix is shade, airflow or relocation, done by your installer.
What inverter overheating looks like
You may not see an alarm at all. The usual signs are:
- A flat top on the generation graph. On a clear day, the power curve in the app should rise smoothly to a peak around midday. If it climbs and then runs flat or steps down through the hottest hours, the inverter may be derating. Our solar monitoring app guide shows where to find the daily power curve.
- An over-temperature or derating message on the screen or in the alarm list.
- The inverter switching off in the afternoon and restarting when it cools.
- Loud, rattling or silent fans where they used to run normally.
A flat top can also come from an inverter deliberately smaller than the array (see inverter DC/AC ratio) or an export limit. If it appears only on very hot days, and lower than on cooler sunny days, heat is the likely cause.

Why inverters derate
An inverter loses a small part of the power it converts as heat, which fins, heat sinks and fans carry into the surrounding air. When that air is already hot, the internal temperature climbs, and the inverter cuts output in steps before parts reach unsafe temperatures. Technical write-ups on thermal derating list high ambient temperature, direct sun, dirty heat sinks, failed fans and an inverter undersized for its array as the common causes.
Each model has its own temperature limits, and the datasheet shows the ambient temperature up to which it delivers full power. Our guide to reading an inverter datasheet shows where to look.
Electronics that run hot every summer day also age faster, so daily derating costs more than a few units.
Common causes in Punjab homes and factories
| Cause | Why it matters | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Inverter in direct afternoon sun | A sun-baked wall gets much hotter than the air around it | Installer: shade canopy or relocation |
| Inverter in a closed room, cupboard or store | Trapped heat builds up through the day | Installer: ventilation or relocation |
| Two inverters too close, or one above the other | One inverter breathes the other's hot exhaust | Installer: re-spacing per manual |
| Dust on vents and heat sink fins | Blocks airflow; very common in dusty areas and near roads | Owner can keep the area clean; internal cleaning by technician |
| Fan failed or clogged | Fan-cooled inverters lose most of their cooling | Technician: fan check or replacement |
| Inverter running near full load for hours | More conversion means more heat | Engineer: review sizing and loads |
| Heavy backup loads in load-shedding | ACs and motors on battery keep the inverter at high output | Owner and engineer: load management |
| Inverter mounted above a battery or other heat source | Heat rises into the inverter | Installer: relocation per manual |
Our guide on where to install your inverter and battery covers good and bad locations in detail. For how heat affects the panels themselves, see solar panels in Punjab summer heat.
Safe checks an owner can do
- Compare the generation curve on a clear, hot day with a clear, cooler day.
- Read the alarm list for over-temperature messages and note the times; see our inverter faults guide.
- Look at the location. Does afternoon sun reach it? Is it in a closed room or cupboard?
- Clear the space around it. The manual gives minimum gaps on each side. Remove boxes, cloth covers or anything blocking the vents, and keep the area clean.
- Listen to the fan, if your model has one.
What not to do
- Do not spray water on the inverter or the wall behind it to cool it. Even an inverter with a good IP rating is not designed for that; see IP ratings for solar equipment.
- Do not cover it with a cloth, plastic sheet or wooden box to keep the sun off. That traps heat. A proper shade canopy leaves open space for air to flow.
- Do not open the cover or poke anything into the vents.
- Do not keep resetting an inverter that shuts down from heat.
Fixes your installer can make
- A ventilated shade canopy that keeps sun off without blocking airflow.
- Relocation to a shaded, ventilated wall, porch, garage or utility room; this may need new cable runs.
- Room ventilation, especially in factories where several inverters share a space, and correct spacing from other inverters and batteries.
- Fan service or replacement where the model uses fans.
- A sizing review if the inverter runs near its limit most of the day; see options on our solar inverter price page.
- Load management: moving heavy loads out of the hottest hours or off the backup circuit; see solar load management.
If an overheating inverter also beeps with an overload warning, read inverter showing overload or beeping. If a breaker near the inverter trips on hot afternoons, read solar breaker tripping. If output is low and heat is not the cause, see low solar production.
Do not forget the battery
Lithium batteries age faster in heat and many limit charging outside their temperature range. Keep them shaded, ventilated and away from the inverter's exhaust; see our lithium battery care guide.
How Solar Works designs for heat
Our in-house engineers choose the inverter location during the site survey, with Punjab summers in mind: shade, airflow, clearances from the manual and a sensible cable route. Where a shaded spot is not available, the design includes a ventilated canopy or a ventilated room. Summer checks are part of our solar maintenance checklist.
For systems we install, after-sales complaints are handled by our own engineering staff. Once a complaint is registered, we target sending service personnel within 48 hours to begin diagnosis; final repair time depends on the fault, parts and manufacturer involvement. Inverter faults covered by the manufacturer go through the manufacturer's own warranty process, and the manufacturer's warranty for each product.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my inverter shut down on hot afternoons?
It is probably protecting itself from overheating. First it reduces output, and if the temperature keeps rising it stops until it cools. Direct sun, a closed room, blocked vents or a failed fan are the usual causes.
What is inverter derating?
Derating means the inverter deliberately limits its output to keep its internal parts within a safe temperature. It shows up as a flattened power curve on hot days. The datasheet states the temperature range for full output.
Is it safe to install an inverter outdoors in Pakistan?
Many inverters are rated for outdoor use, but outdoor does not mean direct sun. An outdoor inverter should be on a shaded wall or under a ventilated canopy, with the clearances in its manual.
Can I put a cover or box over my inverter to protect it from the sun?
Not a closed cover, cloth or box, as that traps heat. A proper ventilated canopy that shades the inverter while leaving space for air to flow is the right approach. Ask your installer to fit it.
Does overheating damage the inverter?
Derating exists to prevent damage, but running hot every day speeds up ageing of the electronics. Repeated shutdowns, a failed fan or burning smells need a technician.
Do you fix overheating on inverters installed by other companies?
Yes, we can inspect and relocate or shade inverters installed by others, as a chargeable service across Punjab. Send photos and your inverter model on WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 first.
