Off Grid Solar Inverter: When Off-Grid Makes Sense in Pakistan
Short answer
An off grid solar inverter runs your loads from solar panels and a battery bank without any connection to the electricity grid, and it never exports power. It makes sense where the grid is absent, very unreliable or too expensive to bring in, such as remote farmhouses, rural sites and standalone buildings. In most Punjab cities with a grid connection, a hybrid system is usually the better choice, because it can also use the grid and, on a three-phase connection, work with net billing.
This guide explains when off-grid is the right answer, how to size the inverter and battery so the system actually lasts through the night, and what an off grid solar system price depends on.
What an off-grid inverter does
An off-grid inverter has three jobs:
- Charge the battery from the panels, using a built-in MPPT charge controller on most current models.
- Convert DC to AC to run your loads.
- Manage backup sources. Many off-grid inverters can also charge from WAPDA or a generator when the battery is low, but they do not feed power back to the grid.
Because there is no grid to fall back on, the battery is not an option but the heart of the system. Every unit you use at night, and on cloudy or foggy days, must come from it. That is the main difference from on-grid and hybrid designs. For the full comparison, read hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid solar.

When off-grid makes sense
- No grid connection, or a very costly one. Remote farmhouses, deras, rural plots and sites where a new connection would need a long line or a new transformer.
- Very unreliable supply. Where outages are long and frequent, and you want independence rather than a grid-dependent system.
- Standalone structures. Outbuildings, remote offices and similar sites with a meaningful load (we design from about 6 kW upwards).
- Farms and agricultural sites. Lighting, fans and small loads at a farmhouse; water pumping is usually better served by a dedicated solar pump and VFD (see solar tubewell and water pump).
When off-grid is the wrong choice
- You have a working grid connection in a city. A hybrid inverter does everything an off-grid one does, plus it can use the grid and, on three-phase connections, export under net billing. See net metering and net billing.
- You only need backup for load-shedding. A hybrid system with a smaller battery is usually more economical.
- Large daytime loads with no need for night power. An on-grid system without a battery is simpler. See can a solar inverter work without a battery.
Sizing an off-grid system: three numbers
1. Inverter size (kW)
Add up the loads that may run at the same time, then allow headroom for motor starting currents (fridges, pumps, AC compressors). Motors can draw several times their running power for a moment at start-up.
Example arithmetic only: fans, lights and a fridge (0.8 kW), a 1.5-ton inverter AC (about 1.5 kW running) and a small water pump (0.75 kW) add up to about 3 kW. With starting headroom, a 5 or 6 kW inverter is a sensible size.
2. Battery size (kWh)
This is where most off-grid systems go wrong. Work it out from the energy you need when there is no sun:
- List night-time loads and hours of use. For example, 0.8 kW of fans, lights and fridge for 10 hours = 8 kWh.
- Divide by the battery's usable depth of discharge and allow for losses. For a lithium battery, usable capacity is typically high; for tubular lead-acid, it is much lower if you want long life.
- Decide how many cloudy or foggy days you want to ride through (days of autonomy). Punjab winters can bring several days of low sun.
Example arithmetic only: 8 kWh a night, allowing about 15% for inverter and battery losses, needs about 9.5 kWh of usable lithium capacity for one night. For a second day of autonomy, double it, or plan a generator or grid charge for those days.
Our battery sizing guide goes step by step, and 24V vs 48V lithium battery explains why larger systems use higher battery voltages. For chemistry, see LiFePO4 vs tubular battery.
3. Panel size (kW)
The panels must run the daytime load and fully recharge the battery in the same day.
Example arithmetic only: a daytime load of 6 kWh plus 9.5 kWh to recharge the battery is about 15.5 kWh a day. Allowing roughly 4 useful sun hours in winter for illustration, and about 20% for losses, that is about 15.5 ÷ 4 × 1.2 ≈ 4.7 kW of panels. Check that the inverter's MPPT can accept that much panel power and that string voltages stay inside its limits.
These are starting estimates. Real output depends on season, dust, shading and panel angle.

Many inverters sold in Pakistan as "off-grid" are in fact hybrid-capable models that can run without the grid. Approved inverter brands we work with include Inverex, Knox, Primax and Luminey for residential and small sites; check the current model families with us. For larger sites, battery systems from Luminey and current Huawei and Sungrow options can be paired with suitable inverters. See all sizes and brands on our solar inverter price page.
Off-grid brands we supply: Primax (Galaxy and Venus), Inverex, Knox, Luminey Elecra and SolarMax. The exact model and battery voltage are named in your quote.
Off grid solar system price in Pakistan
A complete off-grid system costs more than an on-grid system of the same panel size, because the battery bank is larger. The price depends on:
- Inverter size and brand
- Battery chemistry and usable kWh
- Panel capacity
- Structure type (rooftop, ground-mounted or elevated)
- Cable runs on large or remote sites
- Protection, earthing and transport to remote locations
| System (illustrative design) | Inverter | Battery (usable) | Panels | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small remote home | 6 kW | about 10 kWh | about 5-6 kW | WhatsApp for today's rate |
| Larger farmhouse | 10-12 kW | about 15-20 kWh | about 8-10 kW | WhatsApp for today's rate |

Common off-grid mistakes
- Battery too small. The system works in summer and fails on the third foggy day in January.
- Panels too few to recharge. The battery never reaches full charge and ages faster.
- Ignoring motor starts. Pumps and compressors trip an undersized inverter.
- Mixing old and new batteries, or batteries of different types.
- No generator or grid charging plan for long low-sun periods.
- Poor earthing and protection on remote sites with long cable runs.
How Solar Works Pakistan designs off-grid systems
We size the inverter, battery and panels from a proper load list, not a rule of thumb. Design is done in-house, installation by our own teams, and every quotation lists the brand, model, quantity and warranty of each item. The manufacturer's warranty applies per product and is listed on the quotation. We also give a 3-year structure warranty and a 1-year service warranty under applicable project terms. We design systems from about 6 kW upwards and serve all of Punjab.

Frequently asked questions
What is an off grid solar inverter?
It is an inverter that runs your loads from solar panels and batteries without a grid connection. It charges the battery from the panels and converts DC to AC. Many models can also charge from a generator or WAPDA, but they never export power.
Is off-grid or hybrid better in Pakistan?
If you have a working grid connection, hybrid is usually better, because it can use the grid and work with net billing. Off-grid suits sites with no grid, a very unreliable supply, or a costly new connection.
Can an off-grid inverter work without a battery?
Most off-grid inverters are designed to run with a battery. Some can run daytime loads directly from panels, but output drops whenever clouds pass and there is nothing at night. Plan for a battery.
How big a battery do I need for an off-grid system?
Work out the kWh your loads use when there is no sun, allow for depth of discharge and losses, then decide how many cloudy days to cover. Our battery sizing guide walks through each step.
What is the off grid inverter price in Pakistan?
It depends on size, brand and battery voltage. Prices change with the dollar rate and stock, so WhatsApp 0336 666 4321 for today's rate.
Can I run a water pump on an off-grid system?
Small pumps can run on an off-grid inverter sized for their starting current. For tubewells and larger pumps, a dedicated solar pump with a VFD is usually more efficient.
Do you install small off-grid systems?
We design systems from about 6 kW upwards. If your load is smaller, we can help you understand the right size before you buy.
