Solar for Ceramics, Tiles and Sanitary Ware Units
Short answer
In a ceramics, tile or sanitary ware factory, solar does not fire the kiln. Kilns and dryers in Pakistan mostly burn gas, so solar is designed to supply the electrical load: ball mills, slip pumps, presses, glaze lines, kiln fans and roller drives, compressors and polishing lines. That electrical load is large, steady and runs through the day, which makes it a good match for a well-sized solar plant. The two design priorities are keeping the kiln's fans and drives safe through any outage, and keeping panels away from the heat and dust that ceramics plants produce.
This guide explains what solar can and cannot do in a ceramics unit, how to size it, and what to plan around the kiln.
What solar covers, and what it does not
A ceramics plant has two kinds of energy use:
| Energy use | Typical source | Can solar supply it? |
|---|---|---|
| Kiln firing (tunnel, roller or shuttle kiln) | Gas burners | No. Solar supplies the kiln's fans, drives and controls, not the heat |
| Spray dryer and body dryers | Gas-fired hot air, with large fans | Fans and pumps yes; heat no |
| Ball mills and blungers (grinding body and glaze) | Electric motors | Yes, during daylight |
| Slip pumps, agitators and tanks | Electric motors | Yes |
| Hydraulic presses (tiles) and casting lines (sanitary ware) | Electric motors and pumps | Yes |
| Glazing lines, conveyors, kiln roller drives | Electric motors and drives | Yes, with backup for the kiln drives |
| Squaring and polishing lines (tiles) | Large motors | Yes |
| Compressors, lighting, offices | Electric | Yes |
Manufacturers' own associations describe gas as the basic fuel of the pottery and ceramics industry, and gas price changes hit these units hard. Solar does not replace that gas. If you are reviewing a move away from gas-fired captive power generation, that is a separate question, covered in our guide on captive gas power to solar.
Converting a kiln to electric heating is a major process change and is not part of a solar project. For very heavy thermal loads, read our honest guide: can solar run heavy industrial loads?

The loads that matter most
Ball mills
Ball mills grind clay, feldspar and glaze materials for hours at a time. They are among the biggest electrical loads in a ceramics unit and run steadily, which suits solar well. They also start hard: a loaded mill draws a high starting current. Where milling can be scheduled, running mills in solar hours gives the plant the most value.
Presses and polishing lines
Tile presses and polishing lines draw large motor loads through the shift. Many use variable drives. These can affect power quality, so the design checks supply harmonics before adding inverters. See harmonics and power quality in solar-powered factories.
Kiln fans and roller drives
These are small compared with the mills, but they are critical. If the combustion and cooling fans or the roller drive of a roller kiln stop while the kiln is hot, ware can be lost and kiln parts can be damaged. Every kiln already has some arrangement for this, usually a generator or UPS. A solar design must work with that arrangement, never weaken it.
Sizing solar under net billing
New solar connections now come under NEPRA's net billing rules, notified on 9 February 2026. Imported units are billed at your normal tariff, while exported units are credited at a much lower rate. Solar capacity cannot exceed your sanctioned load. The full rules are in our net metering and net billing guide.
A ceramics plant often runs its kiln continuously, with milling, pressing and finishing on one or two shifts. So:
- Size to the daytime electrical load, mainly mills, presses, glazing, polishing and auxiliaries during working hours.
- Move flexible loads into solar hours. Ball milling and slip preparation can often be scheduled; that raises the share of solar used on site.
- Kiln auxiliaries run all night, so their night share stays on grid or generator.
Our guide to sizing under net billing explains the method step by step.
How to estimate the benefit yourself
We do not publish savings figures. The numbers below are round illustrative values only.
For example, if a tile unit uses about 4,000 units a day, and a load study shows about 1,800 of them fall between 9 AM and 4 PM, roughly 1,800 units a day are available for solar to cover directly. If ball milling can be moved into those hours, that figure rises. Multiply the units solar actually covers by your full per-unit tariff, then allow for winter, smog and closed days. A good proposal shows this calculation with your bills.
Heat and dust: where panels go
Ceramics plants are hot and dusty. Both affect solar:
- Heat. Roofs above kilns and dryers get very hot, and hot exhaust can blow across panels. Panel output falls as temperature rises. Panels should go on cooler roofs, upwind of kiln stacks and dryer exhausts, with good airflow underneath. See how heat cuts solar output in Punjab summers.
- Dust. Clay and glaze dust settles on panels and cuts output. Plan safe access and a cleaning routine; see how often to clean solar panels.
- Inverters. Keep inverters out of mill and press halls, in a ventilated, dust-controlled room, away from kiln heat.
Ceramics sheds are often metal sheet roofs; see solar on tin and metal sheet roofs. Where roof space is crowded with exhausts, an elevated structure can lift panels clear; see L2, L3 and elevated structures. Our in-house engineers design every structure, our own team fabricates and assembles it on site, and it carries a 3-year Solar Works Pakistan structure warranty.
Demand charges and mill starts
Larger industrial bills include a fixed charge based on maximum demand (MDI). Several ball mills starting together can set a high MDI for the month, and if they start before solar output builds up, the peak lands on the grid.
- Stagger mill starts so they do not coincide.
- Start mills after mid-morning where the process allows.
- Review power factor correction, since motor-heavy plants carry capacitor banks that interact with solar.
Our guide on MDI in your electricity bill explains demand charges.
Kiln protection, generators and batteries
Standard on-grid inverters switch off when the grid fails. For a ceramics unit, the question is what keeps the kiln safe.
- Generator integration. Most units already rely on a generator for the kiln's critical loads. With a proper controller, solar can share load with the generator in daylight while keeping it above its safe minimum load. See our solar and generator hybrid guide.
- Battery storage (BESS). A battery can carry kiln fans, roller drives and controls through the seconds or minutes until a generator takes over, and can shave mill-start peaks. Some industrial tariffs also charge more at peak hours, which a battery can avoid. Read Battery storage (BESS) for factories: when does it pay?
Solar plant price for a ceramics or tile unit
Ceramics plants are quoted per project after a site survey and design.
| Scope | What drives the cost | Price |
|---|---|---|
| On-grid three-phase solar plant (per kW) | Panel and inverter brands, roof structure, cable runs | WhatsApp for today's rate |
| Generator controller and metering | Number of generators, inverter communication | WhatsApp for today's rate |
| BESS for kiln ride-through or peak shaving (optional) | Usable kWh, power rating, enclosure and cooling | WhatsApp for today's rate |
What to prepare before a site survey
See our energy audit before industrial solar guide. For a ceramics unit, bring:
- 12 months of electricity bills, including MDI.
- Ball mill count, sizes and running hours; press and polishing line ratings.
- Kiln type, its critical electrical loads and current backup arrangement.
- Shift pattern and which loads could move into daytime.

Frequently asked questions
Can solar run a ceramics kiln?
Not the firing itself, which in most Pakistani plants uses gas. Solar supplies the kiln's electrical loads, such as fans, roller drives and controls, along with the rest of the factory's motors during the day.
Which ceramics loads suit solar best?
Ball mills, slip preparation, presses, glazing and polishing lines. They are large, steady and run during working hours. Ball milling is especially useful if it can be scheduled into solar hours.
Will solar protect my kiln during load-shedding?
Standard on-grid inverters switch off when the grid fails, so the kiln still needs its generator or UPS arrangement. A battery can bridge the gap until the generator takes over, and solar can share the load with the generator in daylight.
Does kiln heat affect solar panels?
Yes. Panels lose output as they get hotter, and hot exhaust or dust from kilns and dryers makes it worse. Panels should go on cooler roofs, upwind of stacks, with airflow underneath.
Will solar reduce gas use in a ceramics factory?
Not directly, because solar does not supply kiln or dryer heat. It reduces the electricity you buy. Changing how kilns are fired is a separate process decision.
How big should the solar plant be?
Size it to your daytime electrical load, within your sanctioned load and roof space. Under net billing, exported units earn much less than units used on site.
