Solar for Hostels and Student Housing

Short answer

Solar for hostels needs a different design from a home or an office, because most hostel residents are out during the day and the heavy load arrives in the evening and at night. A good hostel system uses solar for the daytime loads that can be moved into sunlight, such as water pumping, laundry and the mess kitchen, and adds a battery when evening load and load-shedding justify it. The other question to settle early is metering: who pays for the power, and which meter the solar will feed.

This guide is for owners and managers of private student hostels, working men's and women's hostels and university-run hostel blocks in Punjab.

The hostel load profile

TimeWhat is runningSolar fit
Morning (6 to 9 AM)Lights, geysers, water pumps, mess kitchenPartial; sun is low
Day (9 AM to 4 PM)Few residents in; mess, laundry, pumps, cleaning, officeGood, but load is low
Evening (5 to 11 PM)Fans, ACs, lights, laptops and phones charging, messPoor; needs grid or battery
Night (11 PM to 6 AM)Fans, ACs, lights in corridors, securityNone; grid or battery

The mismatch is the core design problem. The panels produce most when the building uses least. That makes it easy to oversize a hostel system: the bill looks large, but most of it comes after sunset, and under net billing the midday surplus is exported at a much lower rate than you pay for evening units. See our net metering and net billing guide.

Battery size follows the night load.

Step 1: move load into the day

Before buying a battery, move every flexible load into solar hours. It is the least expensive form of "storage".

Our solar load management guide has more ideas. Once these loads move, size the solar plant to the new daytime load; see sizing under net billing.

Step 2: decide whether a battery has a job

A hostel is one of the stronger cases for a battery, for two reasons:

  1. The evening load is large and certain. Residents are home every evening.
  2. Load-shedding is felt immediately. A hostel without fans and lights during an outage loses residents.

But a battery is expensive, so size it for a defined job.

Example arithmetic only, with round illustrative numbers. Suppose a hostel's evening and night load is 60 units, and its solar plant produces 80 units on a sunny day while the daytime load, after moving pumps and laundry, is 50 units. That leaves 30 units of surplus. A battery of about 30 kWh usable could store it for the evening, covering half the evening load. The rest still comes from the grid. A battery large enough to cover the whole night would need more panels too, and costs far more. Compare the battery's cost with the value of storing surplus instead of exporting it, plus the backup value. This is a method, not a forecast.

A more modest design is a battery sized only for backup: fans, lights, Wi-Fi and pumps through a load-shedding period, with ACs on grid. See our battery sizing guide and lithium battery prices. For choosing between on-grid and hybrid, see hybrid vs on-grid vs off-grid.

Step 3: settle the metering question

Hostels are often messy on metering.

Tariff category matters too. Depending on the connection and how the DISCO classifies the premises, a private hostel may be billed as domestic or commercial. Net billing is available to three-phase 400 V and 11 kV consumers, and the system cannot exceed your sanctioned load.

Rented buildings

Many private hostels run in rented buildings. The hostel operator pays the bill, but the owner controls the roof. Before investing:

Our guide to solar for rented houses covers the owner-and-tenant question in more detail.

Safety in a building full of residents

A hostel houses many people, often at night, so safety comes first.

Saving before solar

The best-value unit is the one you do not use. Before sizing:

Hostels on a campus

University-run hostels are often on the campus connection. In that case the campus daytime load can absorb the solar output, and hostel evening load is handled at campus level. See solar for universities and large campuses.

Frequently asked questions

Is solar worth it for a hostel?

It can be, but less automatically than for an office, because most hostel load comes in the evening and at night. Moving pumping, laundry and cooking into the day, and sizing solar to that daytime load, gives the best result.

Can solar run hostel ACs at night?

Only through a battery, and covering a whole night of AC load needs a very large battery and more panels. Most hostels keep night-time ACs on grid and use a battery for fans, lights and backup.

How big a battery does a hostel need?

It depends on the job. A backup battery only needs to carry essential loads through outages. A battery for evening use should be sized to the realistic midday surplus, not the whole night's load.

Can one solar system cover all the meters in a hostel?

No. A solar system normally supplies only the meter it is connected to. Hostels with several meters need either a system per meter or rewiring of shared loads.

Can a rented hostel install solar?

Yes, with the owner's written permission and a clear agreement on who owns the system at the end of the lease.

Where should the battery go in a hostel?

In a ventilated, locked room away from bedrooms and escape routes, installed and protected to the manufacturer's requirements.
