Where to Install Your Inverter and Battery at Home
Short answer
Install your solar inverter and lithium battery in a shaded, dry, well-ventilated spot, close to your distribution board (DB) and reasonably close to the panels, out of reach of children and away from heat, water and anything flammable. Never put them in direct sun. Even an IP66 inverter rated for outdoor use runs cooler and lasts longer in shade, and a battery in a hot place ages faster.
Placement is decided during the site survey, because the best spot depends on your house, your DB and where the cables can run. This guide explains what to look for and what to avoid.
The short checklist
A good location for an inverter and battery:
- is shaded all day, with no direct sun on the units in summer;
- has free airflow around the units, with the clearances the manufacturer specifies;
- is dry: no dripping water, no washing area, no rain falling on the units;
- is close to the main DB, so the AC cable run is short;
- keeps the DC cable run from the roof reasonably short and protected;
- is on a solid wall or floor that can carry the weight;
- is out of reach of children and away from pets;
- is away from gas cylinders, fuel, paint, and kitchen heat;
- leaves room to work for maintenance and a clear view of the display.

Heat: the main enemy in Punjab
Inverters produce heat while converting power, and they shed that heat through fins and fans. When the surrounding air is too hot, many inverters derate: they deliberately reduce their output to protect themselves. Installation guidance from inverter makers repeatedly warns against direct sun for this reason.
In a Punjab summer, a wall in direct afternoon sun can get far hotter than the air temperature. An inverter mounted there may cut output exactly when your ACs need it most. Our guide to solar panels in Punjab summer heat explains how heat affects the panels; the same principle applies to the electronics.
Lithium batteries are even more sensitive. Heat speeds up ageing, and most batteries also limit charging when they are too cold or too hot. Each model has an operating temperature range on its datasheet. For care tips, see how long lithium solar batteries last.
Practical rules:
- A shaded porch, garage, stair landing or utility room is usually better than an open roof.
- If an outdoor wall is the only option, choose a north-facing or fully shaded wall and consider a ventilated canopy that does not block airflow.
- Do not box the inverter into a closed cupboard. A cabinet traps heat.
- Do not mount the inverter directly above the battery or above another heat source unless the manufacturer allows it.
IP65 and IP66: what the rating means
Many people search for an "IP66 inverter" because it sounds weatherproof. The IP (Ingress Protection) code has two digits:
| Code | First digit (dust) | Second digit (water) |
|---|---|---|
| IP20 | Protected from fingers and large objects; no water protection | For indoor, dry rooms only |
| IP65 | Dust-tight | Protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction |
| IP66 | Dust-tight | Protected against powerful water jets from any direction |
| IP67 | Dust-tight | Protected against temporary immersion |
An IP65 or IP66 rating means the casing keeps out dust and rain. It does not mean the unit can sit in full sun, and it does not protect against heat. Many home hybrid inverters and batteries are rated for indoor use only, with a lower IP rating, so check the datasheet before planning an outdoor wall.
Dust-tightness matters in Punjab, where dust storms are common. Even with a high rating, keep the fins and fan inlets clean.
Distance to the DB and the panels
Two cable runs matter:
- DC cable from the panels to the inverter. Long runs cause voltage drop and cost more cable. They must be properly sized, protected in conduit or trays, and fitted with DC isolators and surge protection. See our solar cable size guide and earthing and surge protection guide.
- AC cable from the inverter to the DB. Keep it short and run through correctly rated breakers. Our breakers and protection page explains the devices.
The battery cable between battery and inverter carries very high current at low voltage on a 48 V system. It should be as short as the manufacturer allows, so the battery normally sits right beside or below the inverter.
A common compromise is the space nearest to where the main DB is, as long as it is shaded and dry. The roof is close to the panels but usually too hot.
Battery placement: extra rules
- Keep batteries out of direct sun, always.
- Place floor-standing batteries on a level, solid surface, raised slightly if the floor can get wet.
- Fix wall-mounted batteries to a wall that can carry their weight; lithium modules are heavy.
- Keep them away from water tanks, washing machines and anything that drips.
- Do not install in a bedroom or a small, closed room with no ventilation.
- Leave a clear path to the battery's switch or breaker so it can be isolated quickly.
Child, fire and general safety
Inverters and batteries hold dangerous voltages and get hot. Plan for:
- Height and access: mount the inverter at a height where children cannot reach switches, and where an adult can read the display.
- No storage around the units: do not stack boxes, clothes, fuel or paint near them.
- Clear labelling of isolators and breakers.
- Earthing: the inverter, battery and panel frames must be properly earthed.
- Fire precautions: a suitable extinguisher nearby and a clear exit path. Our solar fire safety guide covers DC arc risks and battery safety in more detail.
Places to avoid
| Location | Why it is a poor choice |
|---|---|
| Open roof in direct sun | Overheating, derating, faster battery ageing |
| Kitchen | Heat, steam, grease and gas |
| Bathroom or washing area | Moisture and water |
| Closed cupboard or box | Trapped heat |
| Next to gas cylinders or fuel | Fire risk |
| Bedroom | Fan noise, heat and safety concerns |
| Where children play | Shock and burn risk |
How Solar Works Pakistan chooses the spot
During the free site survey, our engineers look at where your DB is, how cables can run from the roof, where there is shade and airflow, and how the space will be used. We then mount the inverter and battery to the manufacturer's installation manual for the exact models in your quotation. Our own teams install the system, and all necessary tests and checks for safe commissioning are done before handover. For equipment options, see solar inverter prices and lithium battery prices, or read about our solar installation services.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install my solar inverter outside?
Only if the datasheet rates it for outdoor use, usually IP65 or higher, and even then in full shade with rain kept off it. Many home hybrid inverters are indoor units. Direct sun causes overheating and output derating.
What does IP66 mean on an inverter?
IP66 means the casing is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction. It does not protect against heat or full immersion. An IP66 inverter still needs shade and airflow.
Can I keep a lithium battery on the roof?
It is not recommended. A roof in Punjab summer gets very hot, and heat speeds up battery ageing and may stop it charging. Keep batteries indoors or in a shaded, ventilated space beside the inverter.
How far can the inverter be from the panels?
There is no single fixed distance, but longer DC runs mean more voltage drop and cable cost. The engineer sizes the cable for the actual run length and keeps it as short as practical while choosing a cool, shaded spot.
Can the inverter be installed inside a cupboard?
Not a closed one. Inverters need free airflow and the clearances given in the installation manual. A closed cabinet traps heat and can cause derating or faults.
Where should the battery go relative to the inverter?
Usually right beside or below the inverter, because the battery cable carries high current and should be as short as the manufacturer allows. Follow the installation manual for the exact models.
Is it safe to install an inverter in a bedroom?
It is better avoided. Fan noise, heat and the presence of high voltage make a utility area, garage or stair landing a better choice.
