Do You Need a Voltage Protector With Solar? A TOMZN Guide
Short answer
A TOMZN voltage protector is a DIN-rail device that disconnects your supply when grid voltage goes too high or too low, then reconnects it automatically once voltage returns to a safe range. With solar, it is most useful on the grid supply feeding your home or shop, protecting appliances and the inverter's grid input from the unstable voltage common in many parts of Punjab. It does not replace a breaker or a surge protector; it works alongside them.
This guide explains how voltage protection works, where it fits in a solar system, and when it is worth adding.
> Safety note. A voltage protector is installed in your main distribution board on live mains wiring. Installation, and any wiring changes around a solar inverter, must be done by a qualified electrician. DC wiring and DC protection on the panel side carry high voltage even when the grid is off and must only be handled by qualified electricians or solar engineers.
What problem does a voltage protector solve?
In many Punjab neighbourhoods, voltage is not steady. Common problems include:
- Low voltage at peak hours, when the local transformer is overloaded. Motors in fridges, ACs and pumps draw more current and run hot.
- High voltage when load drops, often late at night, or when a neutral wire becomes loose or breaks. A broken neutral can push a single-phase supply far above normal and burn electronics within seconds.
- Repeated on-off when supply returns after load-shedding, with spikes and dips as everyone's load comes back at once.
A voltage protector watches the supply continuously. If voltage leaves the safe window you set, it opens its contacts and cuts power to everything downstream. When voltage has been back inside the window for a set delay, it closes again.
Where a voltage protector sits
Voltage protector vs breaker vs SPD
These three are often confused because they all clip onto the same DIN rail.
| Device | Protects against | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| MCB or MCCB breaker | Overload and short circuit | Fast on short circuit, slower on overload |
| RCCB or RCBO | Earth leakage (shock, fire) | Fast |
| Surge protection device (SPD) | Very short spikes from lightning and switching (microseconds) | Near-instant; diverts surge to earth |
| Voltage protector | Sustained over-voltage and under-voltage (seconds or more) | Reacts in a fraction of a second to seconds; switches load off |
A voltage protector cannot stop a lightning surge; that is the SPD's job. An SPD cannot help with a supply that sits at a dangerous level for minutes; that is the voltage protector's job. Our MCB vs MCCB vs RCCB guide and earthing and surge protection guide cover the other devices.
Typical TOMZN voltage protector settings
TOMZN makes compact, DIN-rail voltage protectors (for example the TOVPD1 family). Typical features of this type of device include:
- a display showing live voltage;
- adjustable over-voltage and under-voltage trip limits;
- adjustable reconnect delay;
- in some models, an over-current trip setting.
The settings are chosen by your electrician to suit your appliances and the inverter's grid input range. Some models are fixed rather than adjustable, so check the exact model before buying.
The reconnect delay matters more than people expect. Fridges, freezers and ACs should not restart instantly after a power cut, because the compressor needs time for pressure to settle. A delay of a few minutes protects the compressor. This is why many people search for a "fridge voltage protector": the same principle applies, just at the whole-house level instead of one plug.
Where a voltage protector fits with solar
The right position depends on the system type. Your engineer should decide; the general logic is below.
On-grid system
An on-grid inverter already has built-in grid protection. It monitors grid voltage and frequency and disconnects itself when the grid goes outside its allowed range. What it does not do is protect your appliances, which are still connected to the grid.
A voltage protector on the grid incomer protects the house loads. It must be sized and set so that it does not interfere with the inverter's export path or cause nuisance tripping when the inverter raises local voltage slightly while exporting. This is a design detail, not a plug-and-play choice.
Hybrid system
A hybrid inverter usually has a grid input, a backup (essential load) output and sometimes a separate grid-tied load output. A voltage protector is commonly placed on the grid supply to the inverter and on any loads still fed directly from the grid. When grid voltage goes bad, the protector disconnects, and the hybrid inverter can carry backup loads from battery and solar.
The backup output itself is generated by the inverter, so its voltage is normally stable and does not need a grid-type protector. Follow the inverter manual for anything connected to its output.
Off-grid system
Where the inverter takes an AC input from the grid or a generator for charging, a voltage protector on that input can protect the inverter's charger from a bad supply.
When is a voltage protector worth it?
Consider one if:
- your area often has low voltage in summer evenings, or high voltage at night;
- you have had appliances or an inverter damaged after a supply fault;
- you run motors (fridges, ACs, water pumps) on circuits fed directly from the grid. See our solar for AC guide for how AC load affects system design;
- your building has an older supply cable or a history of loose neutral faults.
For factories, voltage and phase monitoring is usually handled with dedicated three-phase protection relays and the main switchgear, designed as part of the electrical system rather than added as a single household device.
Voltage protector price
| Item | Use | Price |
|---|---|---|
| TOMZN single-phase voltage protector (DIN rail, adjustable) | Whole-house or shop incomer | WhatsApp for today's rate |
| TOMZN voltage protector, higher current rating | Larger single-phase loads | WhatsApp for today's rate |
The current rating of the protector must match the load and the breaker upstream. If it is undersized, its contacts can overheat. On larger loads, a voltage protector is sometimes used to drive a contactor rather than carry the load directly.
How Solar Works Pakistan approaches protection
We use CHINT and TOMZN for balance-of-system protection on our projects, and GM Cable and Fast Cables for wiring. When our in-house engineers design a system, they look at the supply quality at your site during the survey and decide whether voltage protection is needed and where it should sit. The exact devices appear in your quotation and BOQ, with the manufacturer's warranty per product.
Our own teams install and commission the system, and all necessary tests and checks for safe commissioning are completed before handover. See our breakers and protection range, compare solar inverter prices, or read about our solar installation services.

Frequently asked questions
What does a TOMZN voltage protector do?
It monitors supply voltage and disconnects your circuits when voltage goes above or below the limits you set. Once voltage stays normal for the set delay, it reconnects automatically.
Is a voltage protector the same as a surge protector?
No. A surge protector handles very short spikes, such as from lightning, by diverting them to earth. A voltage protector handles longer periods of high or low voltage by switching the load off.
Does a solar inverter need a voltage protector?
An inverter already protects itself from bad grid voltage, but it does not protect your appliances on the grid side. A voltage protector on the grid supply is often useful, provided it is set so it does not interfere with the inverter.
Can a voltage protector protect my fridge and AC?
Yes, if those loads are downstream of it. The reconnect delay also stops compressors from restarting too quickly after a power cut, which reduces stress on them.
Can I install a TOMZN voltage protector myself?
It should be installed by a qualified electrician. It goes on live mains wiring in the distribution board and must be matched to the load, the breaker and your solar inverter.
