Can I add a new lithium battery to an older battery bank?

Why it happens

Compatibility involves more than voltage. The battery family, system architecture, communication, firmware and approved inverter combination all matter. Dyness specifically advises checking the complete approved configuration before selecting an expansion.

Manufacturer procedures can also require charge alignment and configuration changes. BYD’s guidance for certain Battery-Box systems, for example, describes specific expansion conditions. Those conditions belong to the identified product family and must not be treated as a procedure for every lithium battery.

An older installation therefore needs a model-specific review before a purchase. Its operating history, any existing faults and the proposed new equipment should be considered together. Adding capacity should address a documented need, such as longer evening backup, rather than serve as an assumed cure for unexplained behaviour.

Ask for the proposed configuration in writing. It should identify the equipment being retained, the exact new battery, and the expected outcome. If the purpose is running additional appliances simultaneously, include that requirement explicitly in the assessment.

What you can check yourself

• Photograph accessible model labels without removing covers or moving batteries.
• Collect the original installation date, invoice and handover information.
• Record the number of existing units and any previous replacements.
• Save recent alarms and describe the current backup performance.
• Ask the supplier for the exact proposed model code and confirmation that the combination is manufacturer-approved.
• Share firmware versions only if they are visible through normal user screens; the installer can obtain anything requiring service access.

What not to do

• Do not connect batteries because their advertised voltages match, assume identical-looking products are interchangeable, or manually charge individual units to copy an expansion procedure.
• Charge alignment, wiring and commissioning belong to the qualified installer following the correct documentation.
