What does a battery cell-imbalance alarm mean?

What you will see

• The app or battery display reports cell imbalance or a cell-voltage warning.
• Charging pauses repeatedly before the expected endpoint.
• Backup ends unexpectedly and a battery warning appears.
• A warning returns after being acknowledged or after a restart.

Why it happens

A battery’s total voltage does not show whether every individual cell is within its permitted range. Solis notes that an individual cell can reach an excessive voltage even while the overall battery reading appears unremarkable. The precise alarm and battery data are needed to identify the condition.

Managed lithium batteries may include internal balancing and protections for cell voltage, charging and discharge. These functions have product-specific operating conditions. A balancing function is not permission for the customer to raise charging voltage or bypass a warning.

The service review should distinguish a charge-alignment issue from a cell, sensing or other battery fault. Report whether the warning began after installation, a long period without use, an expansion or an equipment change. Do not label a battery “failed” solely from an unfamiliar message.

The pack voltage can look ordinary while one cell is at its limit. That is different from two batteries showing different percentages.

What you can check yourself

• Copy the complete alarm text and code exactly, including whether the inverter or battery reported it.
• Save the date, time and charge percentage at the event.
• Record whether the system was charging, discharging or idle.
• Note whether the same warning occurs at a similar point in each cycle.
• Capture any cell information already available in the normal user app, without entering service menus.
• If the warning disappears by itself, keep the record. Its disappearance does not explain why it occurred, and a screenshot can help if it returns later.

What not to do

• Do not open the battery, connect to individual cells, use an external balancer or select lead-acid equalisation settings for a lithium battery.
• Do not force repeated full-charge or deep-discharge cycles as an improvised repair.
