What should staff do when an energy-storage cabinet gives a fire or gas alarm?

• A fire, smoke or gas-detection alarm.

Why it happens

NFPA’s energy-storage guidance addresses incident planning and the involvement of personnel qualified to handle damaged storage equipment. A response should follow the facility’s system-specific plan and trained roles.

Different alarms can indicate different conditions. Identifying a faulty sensor is a service task after the situation has been made safe; it is not a reason for untrained staff to enter the area or reset the alarm immediately.

Tell responders that battery storage and solar equipment are present. Existing site plans, equipment identification and access information should be available without sending someone toward the hazard.

• Do not open doors, silence and reset protective equipment to resume operation, or attempt an improvised firefighting method. Do not re-enter or restart the system until the responsible professionals authorise it.
