Growatt SPH hybrid shows BMS COM Fault (Error 500), Battery Open (506) or Battery reversed (505)

Short answer

On a Growatt SPH hybrid, Error 500 means the inverter cannot talk to the lithium battery's BMS; Growatt's first check is that the battery is switched on. Error 506 means the battery looks disconnected, 505 means its terminals look reversed, and 502 or 503 mean its voltage is too low or high.

Why it happens

Without the BMS link the inverter cannot charge safely. A battery that is off, a switch between battery and inverter left off, a loose cable or wrong pairing all cause these codes.
