What you will see
- An outdoor-rated unit installed where water can collect.
- A pressure washer used near electrical enclosures.
- Missing covers or damaged cable-entry seals.
- One component’s rating applied to the whole installation.
Why it happens
IEC explains that the IP framework distinguishes water-exposure conditions, including drops, jets and immersion. Protection against one condition should not be treated as unrestricted protection against every other exposure.
The installed condition also matters. Ask the installer to verify the mounting arrangement, required clearances, cable entries and any shelter requirements against the actual manual.
Corrosion suitability and temperature limits require their own checks. A high-looking IP number does not answer those questions or establish that damaged seals remain effective.
What the IP rating covers
Covered
Specified drops, jets or immersion.
Not covered
Heat, corrosion, pooled water, pressure washing.
Missing covers or damaged cable seals change the installed protection.
What you can check yourself
- Find the exact model and its installation manual.
- Record where the equipment is located and exposed.
- Note externally visible missing covers or damaged seals from a safe position.
- Report recent cleaning, leaks or building alterations.
- Use photographs already available if approaching the equipment would create a risk. Do not open an enclosure to inspect a seal.
What not to do
- Do not spray equipment to test its rating, add unapproved holes or cover ventilation openings. Do not assume that an outdoor enclosure can safely be restarted after submersion or internal water entry.
When to call us
- Request assessment when the installation environment differs from the manual, enclosure protection appears damaged or water entry is suspected.
