Do I still need a generator if I have solar?
Short answer
For most homes with a hybrid system and battery, no. The battery covers normal load shedding. A generator still makes sense for long outages, fog weeks with little sun, heavy loads such as factories, or sites where power must never stop.
If you keep one, it must connect through the inverter’s generator input where the model supports it, or through a proper changeover, never straight into the solar wiring.
When a generator still earns its place
- Outages longer than the battery can cover.
- Winter fog weeks when solar cannot recharge the battery.
- Factories, hospitals or tubewells with heavy loads.
- Sites with no reliable grid at all.

Connecting it safely
Some hybrid inverters have a dedicated generator input; others need a changeover switch. The connection is designed and installed by a technician, and a generator must never back-feed the grid or the inverter’s output.
