Solar Carports and Canopies for Parking Areas

Short answer

A solar carport is an elevated steel structure that carries solar panels over a parking area, so the same space gives shade to vehicles and generates electricity. It suits offices, factories, hospitals, schools, plazas and larger homes that have open parking but limited or weak roof space. Because it stands on its own columns and faces the wind with nothing above it, a carport must be designed by an engineer for its site, not built from a standard drawing.

Where a solar carport makes sense

A carport is more steel and more engineering than a rooftop frame, so it should earn its place. It usually does when:

For petrol pumps, the forecourt canopy is a special case with hazardous-area rules. Our solar for petrol pumps guide covers it. For shops and plazas, see commercial solar for shops and plazas.

Types of solar parking structure

TypeWhat it looks likeSuitsPoints to weigh
Single-column (cantilever, "T" or "Y" frame)One row of columns, panels spread either sideLong rows of parking bays; easy to park and open doorsLarger foundations and heavier sections, because the load is unbalanced in wind
Double-column (portal frame)Columns at front and back of each bayWider spans, multiple rowsMore columns to park around
Long-span canopyLarge frame over a whole yard or loading areaFactory yards, truck baysHeavy steel; needs careful design and good access for cranes
Porch or driveway carportSmall frame over one or two home parking spacesLarger homes with a drivewaySmall capacity; often better combined with the roof system

The parking layout decides the type. A carport that forces drivers to swing around columns will be unpopular, however good the engineering.

What the structure has to handle

Height and clearance

The underside must clear the tallest vehicle that will use the space, with margin. A staff car park and a loading bay for vans or trucks need very different heights. Decide this before design starts, because height drives column size and foundation size.

Wind uplift

A carport is open underneath. Wind can push up on the panels from below as well as down from above, so the whole array behaves like a large sail. Monsoon storms and dust storms in Punjab produce strong gusts. The design must account for:

Our guide to wind, storms and lightning explains why fixings and bracing matter as much as the steel itself.

Approvals

A free-standing structure in a parking area may need permission from your building or development authority, and some landlords and housing societies have their own rules. Check this before you pay for steel.

Drainage: will water drip through?

Solar panels are not a roof. There are small gaps between panels, and rain runs to the lower edge and drips off. Owners have three choices:

  1. Accept some drip. For an open car park this is often fine. Plan where the lower edge falls so water does not land on walkways.
  2. Add a gutter on the low edge to collect run-off and lead it down a column.
  3. Fit sheeting under or between the panels for a fully dry space. This adds cost and weight, and it blocks light from reaching the back of bifacial panels.

Tell your designer which you want at the start. It changes the structure.

Bifacial panels on carports

Bifacial panels collect some light on their rear face as well as the front. A carport is one of the better places for them, because the panels sit high with open space underneath. The rear-side gain depends on the surface below and the height of the panels. A light concrete surface reflects more than dark asphalt, and parked cars change the picture through the day.

Treat any rear-side gain as a bonus that varies by site, not a fixed figure. Our guide to N-type, P-type and bifacial panels explains how they work. Many current N-type panels from approved brands such as LONGi, JinkoSolar, JA Solar and Canadian Solar are available in bifacial, dual-glass versions.

Orientation: parking layout vs ideal angle

On a roof, panels can face south at a chosen tilt. On a carport, the parking rows often set the direction. Designers balance three things:

An engineer settles these trade-offs during the site survey.

Solar carport price in Pakistan

A carport costs more per kW than a rooftop frame, because of the columns, foundations and height. Price depends on span, height, number of bays, foundation work, drainage choice and panel type.

When you compare quotations, check that each names the steel sections, coating, column spacing, clear height, foundation size and drainage approach. Two quotes for the same kW can describe very different structures.

How Solar Works Pakistan builds carports

Elevated and customised structures are one of our particular strengths. For industrial and commercial solar projects and larger homes, we:

Frequently asked questions

Is a solar carport more expensive than rooftop solar?

Usually yes, per kW, because it needs columns, foundations and more steel. It can still be the right choice when the roof is full, weak or in use, or when the shade itself has value.

Will a solar carport keep cars dry in the rain?

Not completely, unless you add gutters or sheeting. Rain runs off the lower edge and some drips through the gaps between panels. Decide at design stage how dry the space needs to be.

Are bifacial panels worth it on a carport?

They often suit carports because the panels are high with open space beneath. The extra output from the rear side depends on the ground surface and height, so treat it as a variable bonus rather than a promised figure.

Can a carport survive monsoon storms?

A properly designed one can. The design must cover wind uplift, column and foundation size, bracing and panel fixings for your site. Ask for these details.

Do I need permission to build a solar carport?

It depends on your city, building authority and, for rented premises, the landlord or society. Check before you order steel.
