Solar Panel Size in Feet: How Much Roof Space Do You Need?

Short answer

A 615 watt solar panel is roughly 7.8 feet long and 3.7 feet wide (about 2,382 × 1,134 mm), covering about 29 square feet. Older 585 and 580 watt panels (now out of stock) are about 7.5 × 3.7 ft. As a rough planning figure, allow about 60 to 70 square feet of open, unshaded roof per kilowatt, including walkways.

Note: every panel below 615 W is now out of stock; we supply 615 W to 720 W. Sizes for 540–600 W panels are kept below for owners of existing systems and older quotes.

All sizes below are approximate industry ranges. The exact size of any panel is on its manufacturer datasheet, and we confirm it for the specific model in your quote.

Solar panel size in feet by wattage

Most solar panels (solar plates) sold in Pakistan today fall into a few standard formats. Within a format, the wattage changes but the size stays the same.

Panel classApprox. size (mm)Approx. size (feet)Approx. areaNotes
540-555 W2,256-2,279 × 1,1347.4-7.5 × 3.7 ftabout 27.5-28 sq ftOlder, mostly P-type format
575-595 W (incl. 580 and 585 W)about 2,278 × 1,134about 7.5 × 3.7 ftabout 28 sq ftCommon N-type format
610-630 Wabout 2,382 × 1,134about 7.8 × 3.7 ftabout 29 sq ftSlightly longer format
690-720 Wabout 2,384 × 1,303about 7.8 × 4.3 ftabout 33.5 sq ftWide format, heavier

Panel thickness is usually around 30 to 35 mm (just over an inch), and a single panel in the 580-620 W range typically weighs roughly 28 to 33 kg. Larger 700 W class panels are heavier and need two people and more care on the roof.

615 watt solar panel size in feet

At about 2,382 × 1,134 mm, a 615 W panel is about 7 feet 10 inches by 3 feet 9 inches, or about 29 sq ft. Many 650–670 W panels use the same footprint, so you get more power from the same roof space. This is the size we use for every roof-space example below.

585 watt solar panel size in feet (out of stock)

At about 2,278 × 1,134 mm, a 585 W panel is about 7 feet 6 inches by 3 feet 9 inches. That is about the size of a single bed laid flat. 585 W panels are now out of stock; this size is kept for owners of existing systems. For the replacement options, see 585 watt solar panel price in Pakistan.

580 watt solar panel size in feet (out of stock)

A 580 W panel is usually physically identical to a 585 W panel from the same family. Manufacturers test every panel and sort it into power "bins": a 580 W and a 585 W panel are often the same design with slightly different measured output. So plan for the same 7.5 × 3.7 ft footprint.

Bigger panels: 620 W to 720 W

Higher-wattage panels are not magic; mostly they are physically larger. A 700 W class panel is noticeably wider than a 585 W panel. Fewer panels can mean less mounting work, but the structure must suit the bigger, heavier module and the inverter must suit its higher current. See 600 to 750 watt solar panels.

How much roof space do you need per kW?

Panel area alone is not enough. You also need room for:

Example arithmetic only. A 615 W panel covers about 29 sq ft. One kilowatt needs about 1.6 such panels, so about 47 sq ft of pure panel area. Adding walkways and row spacing typically raises that to roughly 60 to 70 sq ft per kW on a flat roof. The real figure depends on your roof's shape, the structure type and how much shade there is.

These are planning estimates for a clear flat roof, not a design. Panel counts are rounded up to reach at least the stated size. For panel counts at other wattages, see how many solar panels for a 5 kW or 10 kW system.

What if your roof is small or shaded?

Many Punjab homes have tanks, a stairwell room and high parapets taking up the best space. Options include:

  1. Elevated structures. These save space: panels go above the roof, clear of parapet shadows, and the roof underneath stays usable for tanks, washing lines or seating. For a small home with a high electricity load, an elevated structure is usually the best option, because it fits more panels than the free roof area alone allows. See L2 vs L3 vs elevated structures.
  2. Higher-wattage panels. Slightly more power from the same space, though the gain is modest because bigger panels are also bigger in size.
  3. Moving obstacles. Relocating a water tank can sometimes free a whole row.
  4. Splitting the array. Using two roof areas with separate inverter inputs (MPPTs) where the inverter allows it.

Our engineers design structures in-house, and our own team fabricates and assembles them on site. Every structure carries a 3-year Solar Works Pakistan structure warranty.

Measure your roof before you ask for a quote

  1. Measure the length and width of the usable flat area in feet.
  2. Subtract about 2 to 3 feet from edges near parapet walls.
  3. Mark tanks, stairwells and anything casting a shadow at midday and in the afternoon.
  4. Send the measurements and a few photos, plus your electricity bills, on WhatsApp.

We will check the space during the site survey, which is normally free, and design around it. See complete solar system price for current system figures and solar panel price in Pakistan for panel options.

Frequently asked questions

What is the size of a 615 watt solar panel in feet?

About 7.8 feet by 3.7 feet (roughly 2,382 × 1,134 mm), or about 29 square feet. Check the datasheet of the exact model, as sizes vary slightly between brands.

What is the size of a 585 watt solar panel in feet?

About 7.5 feet by 3.7 feet (roughly 2,278 × 1,134 mm), or about 28 square feet. 585 W panels are now out of stock; we supply 615 W to 720 W.

Is a 580 watt panel the same size as a 585 watt panel?

Usually yes. Within the same panel family, 580 W and 585 W panels are generally the same physical design sorted into different power classes after testing.

How much roof space does a 10 kW solar system need?

About 17 panels of 615 W, covering roughly 495 sq ft of panel area. With walkways and row spacing, plan for about 630 to 730 sq ft of clear, unshaded roof.

How much does a solar panel weigh?

Panels in the 615 to 670 W range typically weigh roughly 28 to 33 kg, and wide 700 W class panels weigh more. Weight matters for the structure and for safe handling on the roof.

Can I fit solar on a small roof?

Often yes. An elevated structure saves space, clears parapet shadows and keeps the roof usable underneath, which makes it the best choice for a small home with a high electricity load. Our survey checks what fits and what output to expect.

Do bigger panels need less roof space?

Only slightly. Higher-wattage panels are physically larger, so the power per square foot improves a little, not dramatically.
