Solar for Sialkot Manufacturers: Sports Goods and Surgical Instrument Makers
Short answer
For Sialkot manufacturers, solar works best on the steady daytime loads of grinding, polishing, stitching and finishing halls, with the plant protected from metal dust and designed around GEPCO's net billing rules. A well-engineered system lowers the units you buy and gives you measured energy data that export buyers increasingly ask about. It will not run a heat-treatment furnace on its own, and it should not be sold to you as if it could.
Our Sialkot page covers prices, GEPCO and homes in the city. This guide goes deeper into the production processes of surgical, dental, beauty-instrument and sports goods makers, and how each affects a solar design.
Why energy matters more now
Sialkot competes on skill and labour cost in world markets. Exporters say rising energy and compliance costs are eating into that advantage. In January 2026, the Surgical Instruments Manufacturers Association of Pakistan told Arab News that surgical exports had fallen to roughly $445 million in 2025 from nearly $492 million in 2024, and that electricity costs were rising without government support. Solar is one of the few cost levers a factory owner controls directly.
Interest is not new. A 2015 study of Sialkot's leather, sports and surgical sectors found that industrialists preferred rooftop solar PV over other renewable options because it was easier to install and more flexible, and noted how widely costly diesel generators were used.

Where the power goes, process by process
| Process | Typical equipment | How it behaves | Solar design point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forging | Drop hammers, presses, furnaces (often gas or oil fired) | Heavy, impulsive loads; heat often not electric | Solar covers motors and auxiliaries, not fuel-fired heat |
| Grinding and filing | Grinding wheels, belt grinders | Many medium motors running all shift | Excellent daytime match; metal dust risk |
| Polishing and buffing | Buffing motors, extraction fans | Steady while in use | Good daytime match; fine abrasive dust |
| Heat treatment and hardening | Electric or fuel furnaces | Large, long cycles if electric | Solar can cover only part; plan separately |
| Electropolishing, passivation, plating | Rectifiers, pumps | Steady DC loads, harmonic sources | Check power quality |
| Cleaning and sterilising | Ultrasonic cleaners, autoclaves, dryers | Medium, intermittent | Daytime match |
| Ball, glove and garment stitching | Sewing machines, lights, fans | Many light loads | Very good daytime match |
| Ball lamination and moulding (machine-made balls) | Heated presses, compressors | Heater and motor loads | Count separately |
| Compressed air | Compressors | Cycles all shift | Leaks waste energy; fix first |
| Offices and sample rooms | ACs, IT | Daytime | Good daytime match |
Many Sialkot exporters also rely on a network of smaller vendor workshops for grinding or finishing. Those workshops have the same load types on a smaller scale, often on single-phase or small three-phase connections. Our projects start from about 6 kW.
Before sizing anything, separate steady daytime loads from fuel-fired heat and from short heavy peaks. Our guide to the energy audit before industrial solar explains what to measure.
Metal dust: the problem specific to Sialkot
Grinding and buffing produce fine metal and abrasive dust. Unlike wood or cotton lint, metal dust can be conductive and abrasive. If it gets into an inverter, a combiner box or a breaker panel, it can cause tracking, corrosion and short circuits.
- Put inverters in a separate, clean room with filtered ventilation, well away from grinding and buffing halls. See where to install the inverter and battery.
- Choose enclosures with suitable protection ratings for anything that must sit near production. Our guide to IP ratings explains the codes.
- Route extraction outlets away from the array, or dust will settle on the panels.
- Seal cable entries to distribution boards and combiner boxes.
- Clean inverter filters and heat sinks on a schedule.
Three-phase balance, MDI and power factor
Factories here typically mix three-phase grinding motors with single-phase sewing machines, lights and fans. Uneven phases waste inverter capacity and can trip protection. Measure each phase before design and rebalance boards where needed. See three-phase vs single-phase inverters and phase imbalance with solar.
Two bill items need attention:
- Maximum demand (MDI). Hammers, presses and many motors starting together set demand peaks. Solar reduces units bought but does not reliably reduce MDI. Read what MDI means on your bill.
- Power factor. Motor-heavy factories often have capacitor banks. After solar, the meter sees fewer kWh but the same reactive power, so measured power factor can drop. Our guide to power factor and solar explains how to prevent penalties.
GEPCO and net billing
Sialkot is supplied by GEPCO. New solar connections come under NEPRA's net billing rules, notified on 9 February 2026: imports at your tariff, exports credited at a much lower rate, reported at about Rs 10-11 per unit when the rules were notified. Capacity cannot exceed your sanctioned load, with an overall cap of 1 MW. Details are in our net metering and net billing guide and on our Sialkot page.
For a factory with a full day shift, most solar output is used on site, which is where it is worth most. Size around your working days, not your roof; see sizing under net billing.
Solar Works Pakistan prepares, submits and follows up your GEPCO net billing application.
Shipping deadlines and backup
Export orders run to shipping dates. When the grid fails, the options are:
- Generator with solar. Solar can share daytime load with an existing generator through a proper controller that prevents reverse power and keeps the generator above its minimum load. See solar and generator hybrid. We do not sell generators, but we integrate existing sets.
- Battery storage. A BESS can keep critical lines, compressors or IT running through short outages and smooth solar dips. Our guide to BESS for factories explains when it pays.
Sialkot's heavier monsoon and thunderstorms make anchoring, surge protection and earthing important; see storms and lightning safety.
Energy data for export buyers
International buyers of surgical instruments and sports goods increasingly ask suppliers about energy use and emissions. On-site solar that you use reduces the grid electricity you buy, and therefore the emissions linked to it. Our guide to green compliance for exporters explains what buyers typically ask for and what solar does and does not do; it is written for textiles, but the method is the same for metal and sports goods.
Practical steps for a Sialkot factory:
- Fit a dedicated generation meter at the solar plant output, as well as inverter monitoring. See solar monitoring apps.
- Keep monthly records of solar generation, grid imports, exports and generator fuel.
- Keep the paperwork: BOQ with brands and models, single-line diagram, commissioning records.
- Ask your buyer which reporting format and emissions factor they use.
- Understand certificates. Renewable energy certificates are a separate instrument from on-site solar; see I-REC in Pakistan.
We monitor our systems remotely, subject to equipment capability.

Frequently asked questions
Can solar run a grinding and polishing unit?
Yes, in daylight. Grinding and buffing motors run steadily through the shift, which matches solar output well. The grid or a generator covers clouds, starting peaks and any night work.
Can solar power my heat-treatment furnace?
Only partly. An electric furnace is a large, long load that a rooftop plant can rarely cover alone, and fuel-fired furnaces do not use electricity for heat. We plan solar around the loads it can serve well.
Does metal dust damage solar inverters?
It can. Fine metal dust is conductive and abrasive, so inverters should sit in a separate, clean, ventilated room with sealed cable entries, and their filters should be cleaned regularly.
Will buyers accept rooftop solar as evidence of lower emissions?
On-site solar you use reduces the grid electricity you buy, which buyers can see in your records. Ask your buyer which reporting method they use, and keep metered generation data.
Do you have an office in Sialkot?
No. Our offices are in Faisalabad (head office) and Lahore. Our teams travel to Sialkot for site surveys, installation and after-sales service.
Can small vendor workshops in Sialkot go solar?
Yes, if their load justifies a system of about 6 kW or more. Small grinding and finishing workshops with daytime work suit solar well.
