Wi-Fi Dongle for Solar Inverter and Monitoring Apps: Check Your System From Your Phone

Short answer

A Wi-Fi dongle (also called a data logger or monitoring stick) plugs into your solar inverter and sends its readings over your home or factory internet to the manufacturer's monitoring app. With it, you can see today's generation, battery charge and any fault alarm on your phone, from anywhere. Each inverter brand uses its own app, so the right dongle and app depend on the inverter you own.

How solar monitoring works

There are three parts:

  1. The inverter measures solar input, grid import and export, battery charge and its own temperature and status.
  2. The communication module. On most home and small commercial inverters this is a Wi-Fi dongle that plugs into a communication port. Some models have Wi-Fi built in, and larger commercial systems often use a wired data logger or a 4G option.
  3. The app or web portal. The dongle sends data to the manufacturer's cloud platform. You log in with an account created at commissioning.

The dongle needs a stable Wi-Fi signal where the inverter is mounted. If the inverter is in a basement, stairwell or a far corner of a factory shed, plan for a Wi-Fi extender or a wired connection at the design stage.

Do not buy a generic dongle and hope it works. Ask for the module the inverter manufacturer specifies for your exact model.

The table lists the monitoring platforms for the inverter brands we supply where we have confirmed the name from the manufacturer's own app or website listing. Apps get renamed and updated, so always follow the inverter's manual.

What to watch in the app

You do not need to study every graph. Check a few numbers regularly.

Daily generation (kWh)

The most useful number. Compare clear, sunny days with other clear, sunny days. Generation naturally changes with season, fog, smog and cloud, so do not compare a December day with a May day.

Battery state of charge (SOC)

For hybrid systems, check that the battery charges during the day and how low it goes overnight. A battery that regularly runs very low, or never reaches full charge on sunny days, needs a settings or sizing review.

Grid import and export

Shows how much power you take from and send to the grid. Under net billing, using more of your own solar during the day is usually worth more than exporting it, so this view helps you shift heavy loads such as washing machines, water pumps and ACs into sunny hours. Our net billing guide explains why.

Alarms and fault history

Every alarm has a time stamp. If a fault repeats at the same time each day, that pattern helps an engineer find the cause. Our inverter faults guide explains common alarms and safe owner checks.

Inverter temperature

Some apps show internal temperature. If output drops every summer afternoon with a temperature or derating warning, the inverter may need better ventilation.

Using monitoring to spot problems early

What you see in the appPossible causeWhat to do
Generation lower on a clear day, panels visibly dustyDirt on panelsClean safely; see our panel cleaning guide
Generation lower on a clear day, panels cleanString, connector or inverter issueNote the date and call service

A monthly look at the generation graph, plus a quick check after storms, rain or long power cuts, catches most problems early. Our solar maintenance checklist puts this into a simple routine.

How Solar Works sets up monitoring

Current and new systems we install are designed with monitoring capability, subject to what the selected equipment supports. Some older systems in the market have limited or no remote monitoring because of the equipment available when they were installed.

At handover, our team covers how to operate the system and inverter, how to use the monitoring app and how to read basic system status. The exact handover depends on the project and the installed equipment. We also monitor our projects remotely where the equipment allows, which helps our own engineering staff respond when something looks wrong. After a complaint is registered, we target sending service personnel within 48 hours to begin diagnosis.

When comparing offers, check that the quotation names the monitoring module and states whether a dongle is included; our guide to comparing solar quotations lists this among the items to check. See current inverter options on our solar inverter price page and how we deliver projects on our solar installation services page.

Frequently asked questions

Do all solar inverters need a Wi-Fi dongle for monitoring?

Many home and small commercial inverters need a plug-in Wi-Fi dongle, while some have Wi-Fi built in. Larger systems may use a wired data logger. Check the manual for your exact model.

Which app does an Inverex inverter use?

It depends on the model and its Wi-Fi module. For systems we install, we set up the correct app on your phone at handover.

Why does my solar app show the inverter offline?

Usually the dongle has lost its internet connection: the router was off, the Wi-Fi password changed or the signal is weak. If the inverter screen itself shows normal operation, the system is probably still producing power. Reconnect the dongle using the manual's steps.

Can I monitor my solar system without internet?

Not remotely. The inverter's own screen still shows live readings, and some inverters allow a local connection to a phone nearby. Remote apps need the dongle to be online.

What should I check in my solar app every day?

Look at daily generation, battery state of charge for hybrid systems, and any new alarms. Compare clear sunny days with similar days, not across seasons.

Can my installer see my system remotely?

If you give them access in the app, yes. Solar Works monitors its projects remotely where the equipment allows, which helps our team respond to faults on systems we install.
