IP Ratings for Inverters, Batteries and Panels
Short answer
An IP rating is a two-digit code that tells you how well a piece of equipment keeps out dust (first digit) and water (second digit): IP65, for example, means dust-tight and protected against water jets. For solar equipment it decides where a unit can safely be mounted: indoors, on a sheltered outdoor wall, or fully exposed on a roof. It says nothing about heat, sunlight or corrosion, which matter just as much in Punjab.
Our guide on where to install your inverter and battery covers placement at home. This article explains the code itself in full, the ratings you will meet on each part of a solar system, and how a poor installation can undo a good rating.
How to read an IP code
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The code is defined in the international standard IEC 60529. It is always "IP" followed by two characters.
First digit: solids and dust
| Digit | Protection |
|---|---|
| 0 | None |
| 1 | Large objects, such as the back of a hand |
| 2 | Fingers |
| 3 | Tools and thick wires |
| 4 | Most wires and small screws |
| 5 | Dust-protected: some dust may get in, but not enough to stop safe operation |
| 6 | Dust-tight: no dust gets in |
Second digit: water
| Digit | Protection |
|---|---|
| 0 | None |
| 1 | Dripping water |
| 2 | Dripping water with the unit tilted up to 15° |
| 3 | Spraying water |
| 4 | Splashing water from any direction |
| 5 | Water jets |
| 6 | Powerful water jets |
| 7 | Temporary immersion up to 1 metre |
| 8 | Continuous immersion beyond 1 metre, on terms set by the manufacturer |
| 9 | High-pressure, high-temperature spray at close range |
An X in place of a digit means that property was not tested. IPX4, for example, says nothing about dust.
Higher is not always "more"
The water digits are not a simple ladder above 6. A unit tested for immersion (7 or 8) has not necessarily passed the jet tests (5 or 6). Equipment that passes both is labelled with both, such as IP66/IP67. For an outdoor inverter facing monsoon rain and hose cleaning, jet protection is the relevant test, not immersion.

Typical IP ratings across a solar system
These are typical ranges in the market, not specifications for any model. Always check the datasheet of the exact product quoted.
| Component | Typical rating | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Panel junction box | IP67 or IP68 | Sealed for life outdoors, including standing water on the back sheet |
| MC4-type connectors | IP67 or IP68 when mated | Unplugged, they have no water protection; caps or prompt connection matter |
| Commercial string inverters | IP65 or IP66 | Designed for sheltered outdoor walls |
| Home hybrid inverters | From IP20 (indoor only) to IP65 | Varies widely; many are indoor units |
| Lithium batteries | From IP20 to IP55 or IP65 | Many home batteries are indoor products |
| DC combiner and AC boxes | IP65 or higher for outdoor use | The rating only holds with correct cable glands |
| Monitoring dongles | Often lower than the inverter | Usually plug in under a cover on the inverter |
Our guides to reading an inverter datasheet and reading a panel datasheet show where the rating appears. For more on the box on the back of each panel, see bypass diodes and junction boxes explained.
What an IP rating does not tell you
This is where most mistakes happen. An IP65 or IP66 rating does not cover:
- Heat. A dust-tight, waterproof inverter in full afternoon sun still overheats and reduces its output. Check the operating temperature range and derating curve separately, and read inverter overheating in summer.
- Sunlight and UV. Plastic housings, cable glands and labels can become brittle in years of Punjab sun. UV resistance is a separate property.
- Corrosion and chemicals. IP tests use fresh water. Factory atmospheres with ammonia, dyes, acids or salt, common in some industrial units, need separately rated materials.
- Condensation inside. A sealed box can still collect moisture when hot days are followed by cool nights. Breather vents and correct mounting help.
- Impact. Resistance to knocks and hail is rated separately (IK code), not by IP.
- Insects and lizards. Dust-tight enclosures keep them out; lower ratings may not.
How a good rating gets undone on site
A box is only as tight as its weakest opening. Common faults we look for:
- Unused cable entries left open or plugged with tape instead of proper blanking plugs.
- Wrong gland size, so the gland cannot grip the cable and water tracks in.
- Cables entering from the top of an outdoor box, so rain runs straight down into the gland. Entries should normally be at the bottom.
- Missing drip loops on cables, letting water run along them into the enclosure.
- Lids not closed fully after maintenance, or gaskets damaged.
- Connectors left unmated on the roof during installation, filling with dust and water before they are plugged in.
- Cleaning water aimed at inverters and boxes. Panel washing should never involve spraying the inverter, junction boxes or DB. See our panel cleaning guide.
Water that gets past a seal often shows up as an isolation fault on the inverter after rain. Our inverter faults guide explains these alarms.
What Punjab conditions mean for IP choice
- Dust storms (aandhi) in spring and summer: fine dust gets into anything less than dust-tight. Outdoor equipment should be rated 6 for dust.
- Monsoon downpours: driving rain behaves more like a jet than a drip. Outdoor equipment needs a water rating of 5 or 6, plus a rain shade.
- Heat: IP does nothing for it. Shade, airflow and clearances do.
- Lightning season: water inside an enclosure makes surge damage more likely. See storm and lightning safety.
Quick guide: which rating where
| Location | Minimum to look for |
|---|---|
| Indoor room, clean and dry | IP20 is acceptable if the manufacturer allows it |
| Indoor but dusty (factory floor, store room) | IP5X or IP6X |
| Covered outdoor wall, shaded and sheltered from direct rain | IP65 |
| Exposed roof or open yard | IP66, plus a shade canopy for heat |
| Equipment that could sit in standing water | IP67 or IP68 |
These are rules of thumb. The installation manual for each product sets the final requirement, and it takes priority.
How Solar Works Pakistan applies this
Our in-house engineers choose equipment with the IP rating, temperature range and enclosure materials that suit each site, then place it to protect it from sun and rain. We supply the complete balance of system, including enclosures and protection from brands such as CHINT and TOMZN; see breakers and solar protection and MC4 connectors and earthing. For larger arrays, see string fuses and DC combiner boxes.
Every quotation names the brand and model of each major item, so you can check its rating. Current rates are on our solar inverter price and lithium battery price pages, and our installation services page explains how we work.

Frequently asked questions
What does IP65 mean?
The 6 means the casing is dust-tight. The 5 means it is protected against water jets from any direction. It is a common rating for outdoor inverters on sheltered walls.
What is the difference between IP65 and IP66?
Both are dust-tight. IP66 is tested against more powerful water jets than IP65. For an exposed roof or yard in monsoon rain, IP66 gives more margin.
Is IP68 better than IP66?
Not necessarily for an inverter. IP68 is about immersion; IP66 is about jets. A product can pass one test and not the other unless it carries both ratings, such as IP66/IP68.
Can an IP65 inverter be installed in direct sun?
The IP rating allows outdoor mounting, but it does not protect against heat. Direct sun causes overheating and reduced output. Install it in shade with good airflow.
What IP rating does a solar battery need?
That depends on where it goes. Many home lithium batteries are indoor products with low ratings; outdoor batteries need a high rating and protection from heat. Follow the manufacturer's installation manual.
Are MC4 connectors waterproof?
They are rated for water protection only when properly plugged together. Unmated connectors, or connectors of different brands mixed together, can let water in.
Does IP rating cover corrosion?
No. IP tests use fresh water and dust. Factories with chemical fumes or corrosive air need equipment with suitable materials and coatings as well.
