What you will see
- A similar power plateau on several clear days.
- A flat section near the inverter’s documented AC rating.
- A new plateau after a settings change or system expansion.
- A graph that looks flat while the equipment reports an alarm.
- A chart of grid export is not the same as a chart of total solar generation. Make sure the selected measurement is the one you intend to assess.
Why it happens
Power clipping occurs when the inverter’s maximum AC output limits conversion of available DC power. NREL’s modelling guidance distinguishes that output limit from other limits, including the inverter’s permitted operating-voltage range.
A similar-looking plateau does not prove clipping. The installer should compare the curve with the actual inverter rating, operating status and any configured power-control limit. Export-control arrangements can restrict output for a different reason from the inverter simply reaching its rated capacity.
Where clipping is confirmed, the next question concerns its significance across the system’s expected energy production. A short peak-period limit should not be confused with the complete loss of a generating string or an inverter shutdown.
A plateau can mean different things
Plateau at the inverter rating
May be clipping. Check its significance over the day.
Plateau below the rating
Export limit, heat or a fault. Needs a review.
A grid-export chart is not the same as total solar generation.
What you can check yourself
- Save a full-day graph rather than a cropped flat section.
- Record the graph’s label and units.
- Note any alarm and the battery or grid status at that time.
- Provide the inverter model and installed panel capacity.
- Mention recent changes to panels or operating settings.
- Existing commissioning records can help establish whether the observed limit was part of the original design.
What not to do
- Do not disable export controls or raise protective limits to change the curve. Do not add panels on the assumption that they will automatically remove a plateau. Avoid deciding that the inverter is faulty from graph shape alone.
When to call us
- Request a review if the plateau is new, significantly different from the documented design or accompanied by warnings and lost production.
Graph reviews in Faisalabad and Lahore
Send our Faisalabad or Lahore team several clear-day graphs and your inverter model. We will check whether the plateau matches its rating.
Send us
