What happens when the inverter loses communication with its meter or export controller?

What you will see

• A meter, EPM, communication or failsafe warning appears.
• Power-flow readings freeze or disappear.
• Generation becomes restricted after electrical work.
• The controller cannot see one of several connected inverters.

Why it happens

An export power manager uses communication to receive information and control the connected inverters. Solis documents RS485 communication faults when an EPM cannot communicate with the required equipment.

Depending on the model and configuration, a lost control link can lead to a failsafe condition. It should not be assumed that an operating inverter is still following the intended export arrangement.

Internet access is a separate question. A working phone connection or a recently refreshed app does not confirm that the local meter-to-inverter link is healthy. Conversely, an app being offline does not by itself prove that the local control link has failed.

The installer should establish which device reports the error and which connection it concerns. Cable condition, device power and configuration belong in that review. A connector that resembles a network plug must not be treated as interchangeable with a router connection.

What you can check yourself

• Photograph the exact inverter and controller warnings.
• Note whether the meter or controller’s visible display is on.
• Save the timestamp of the last valid power-flow readings.
• Record recent meter, inverter, router or electrical work.
• For multiple inverters, identify which units the normal app still displays.
• Describe any missing information rather than substituting an estimated value. If the screen shows a frozen reading, keep the timestamp visible so it is not mistaken for live data.

What not to do

• Do not swap communication plugs, alter addresses, reverse wires or disable failsafe/export control. Do not enter installer menus to make a warning disappear.

When to call us

• Contact us for a persistent control-communication warning, unexpected generation restriction or changed export behaviour. Where an operating restriction has been agreed for the site, tell us so it can be considered during the assessment.
