How should a solar battery be stored and restarted after months without use?

What you will see

• The battery will not wake when the property reopens.
• A low-charge or protection warning appears.

Why it happens

Battery manufacturers specify storage conditions and may require periodic charge checks or maintenance charging. Dyness, for example, includes storage and recharge requirements in its product documentation. The appropriate charge level and inspection interval must come from the exact battery’s instructions.

“Unused” also needs clarification. Equipment left connected may still have electrical demand, while a properly isolated system has a different situation. Record whether the system remained connected, was deliberately shut down, or lost its charging supply during the closure.

Restarting should not become a trial-and-error exercise. Batteries exposed to impact, flooding or other damage require professional inspection, and a damaged system should not be restarted merely because its indicator lights still work.

For a planned closure, ask who will carry out the required checks and keep the record. A manufacturer-required maintenance interval can be missed if everyone assumes someone else is monitoring the property.

• Describe whether the grid and solar system remained available during the closure.
• For business premises, include any building work, equipment relocation or contractor activity near the installation. Share what is known; do not guess a shutdown sequence that nobody recorded.

What not to do

• Do not jump-start the battery, attach a car charger, bypass a protection state or repeatedly operate breakers to wake it.
• Do not assume that a storage instruction for another lithium battery applies to this model.
