Annual Solar Maintenance Checklist for Homes and Factories
Short answer
Solar maintenance is mostly simple: keep panels clean, watch the monitoring app, keep the inverter cool and ventilated, and have a qualified technician inspect the electrical side, structure and earthing at least once a year. Owners can do the visual and app checks; anything that involves opening enclosures, tightening connections or testing earthing is technician work. In Punjab, add seasonal checks before summer, before the monsoon and during winter fog.
Why solar systems still need maintenance
A solar system has no engine and few moving parts, so it needs far less care than a generator. But it sits outdoors through dust storms, 45 °C-plus summers, monsoon rain and winter fog. Over time, dust builds up on panels, connectors loosen with heat cycles, cable insulation is damaged by sun or rodents, inverter vents clog and structure bolts can corrode. Small problems caught early are cheap to fix; the same problems left for a year can mean lost output or a safety risk.
Maintenance rhythm
Weekly
Check the app and inverter display
Monthly
Clean panels (more often in dust and smog)
Yearly
Torque, earthing, SPD and connector check
Safety first
Owner tasks in this checklist are visual checks, app checks and cleaning from safe access. Do not open the inverter, junction boxes, combiner boxes or battery enclosure. Panels produce DC voltage whenever there is light, even with the grid off. Do not walk on panels. If something looks burnt, swollen, wet or hot, stop and call a technician.
The maintenance checklist
| Frequency | Task | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Daily or every few days | Glance at the app: today's generation, battery charge, any new alarm | Owner |
| Weekly to monthly | Look at panels for dust, bird droppings, lint or leaves; clean when visibly dirty | Owner or cleaning staff |
| Monthly | Compare generation on clear days with similar clear days last month | Owner |
| Monthly | Check inverter vents and surroundings are clear of dust, boxes and stored items | Owner |
| Monthly | Look at visible cables for sagging, sun damage, rodent damage or loose cable ties | Owner (look only) |
| Quarterly | Check breakers and indicator lights at the distribution board; note any that trip repeatedly | Owner (look only) |
| Quarterly | Battery room or area: clean, dry and ventilated; no heat sources nearby | Owner |
| Quarterly (factories) | Thermal or visual inspection of connectors, combiner boxes and DB terminals for heat marks | Technician |
| Annually | Tighten and inspect DC and AC terminations, MC4 connectors and isolators | Technician |
| Annually | Test earthing and check SPD status indicators | Technician |
| Annually | Inspect structure bolts, anchors, coating and rust; check for movement | Technician |
| Annually | Check inverter firmware, settings and logs; review battery health in the app | Technician |
| Annually | Compare a full year of generation with the previous year, season by season | Owner with technician |
For factories and large commercial plants, the frequency of technician checks should be set by the plant size, dust levels and how critical the load is. Our industrial and commercial solar page covers larger systems.
Owner tasks explained
Keep panels clean
Dust is the biggest everyday loss in Punjab. Clean early in the morning or late afternoon with clean water and a soft brush, never with a pressure washer or detergent. Our solar panel cleaning guide covers the safe method and how often to clean.
Watch the monitoring app
The app is your early-warning system. A drop in generation on a clear day with clean panels, a battery that stops reaching full charge, or the same alarm several days in a row all need attention. See our solar monitoring app guide for what to look at, and our inverter faults guide for safe checks when an alarm appears.
Keep the inverter cool and clear
Inverters reduce output when they overheat. Keep vents free of dust and never store boxes, clothes or cleaning equipment against them.
Look after batteries
Keep the battery area dry, ventilated and away from heat. Lithium batteries manage themselves through their BMS, but heat shortens life. If you use older lead-acid batteries, they need more regular attention; our guide on LiFePO4 vs tubular batteries explains the difference.
Technician tasks explained
- Electrical terminations. Heat cycles can loosen terminals. A loose connection runs hot and can cause arcing. A technician isolates the system safely before checking and tightening.
- Earthing and surge protection. Earth pits dry out and connections corrode. Earthing should be tested, and surge protection devices checked, especially before the monsoon. See our earthing and surge protection guide.
- Structure. Bolts, anchors and coatings are inspected for rust, movement or damage after storms. Our guide to solar structures explains structure types.
- Inverter and battery settings. Firmware, export settings and battery parameters are reviewed against the design.
Seasonal checks for Punjab
Before summer (March to April)
- Clean panels thoroughly after winter.
- Check inverter ventilation and shade; summer heat causes derating.
- Make sure the battery area stays cool.
- Review the app: spring generation should rise as days lengthen.
Before the monsoon (June)
- Technician check of earthing, SPDs and DC connections.
- Inspect structure bolts and anchors for storm loads.
- Check cable entries and enclosures for gaps where water can enter.
- Clear roof drains around the array so water does not pool.
- After heavy rain, watch the app for isolation or earth-fault alarms.
Winter fog and smog (November to January)
- Expect lower generation; fog and smog cut sunlight. See our guide on solar panels in fog and smog.
- Rinse off the sticky smog film; dry brushing alone often leaves it.
- If you rely on a battery, check that it still reaches a good charge on short days.
What Solar Works provides after installation
For systems we install, after-sales service is handled by our own engineering and technical staff.
- 1-year service warranty, including breaker replacement, subject to the applicable project terms.
- 3-year structure warranty. After the warranty period, the customer is responsible for appropriate maintenance.
- 48-hour response target: once a complaint is registered, we target sending service personnel within 48 hours to begin diagnosis. Fix time depends on the fault, parts and manufacturer involvement.
- After the first year, maintenance and service are chargeable when you need them. We do not require an annual maintenance contract, but if you want one, we can arrange it.
Panels, inverters and batteries are covered by their manufacturers' own warranties. Find out more on our solar installation services page.

Frequently asked questions
How often does a solar system need maintenance?
Owners should check the app regularly and clean panels when dirty, which in dusty Punjab can be weekly to monthly. A qualified technician should inspect the electrical connections, earthing and structure at least once a year, and before the monsoon if possible.
What solar maintenance can I do myself?
Cleaning panels from safe access, watching the monitoring app, keeping inverter vents clear and keeping the battery area cool and dry. Do not open any enclosure or touch DC wiring.
Do solar panels need maintenance if it rains a lot?
Yes. Rain helps but often leaves mud streaks, and the monsoon brings storms and moisture that can cause earth faults. Check the app after heavy rain and have earthing and connections inspected before the season.
Is an annual maintenance contract necessary?
Not always. Solar Works does not require one; after the first year, service is chargeable when needed. Factories and larger commercial sites often prefer a contract for scheduled inspections, and we can arrange one.
What does an annual solar inspection include?
Typically checking and tightening DC and AC terminations, inspecting connectors, testing earthing, checking surge protection, inspecting the structure, and reviewing inverter logs, settings and battery health.
Does maintenance affect the manufacturer's warranty?
Manufacturers usually expect products to be installed and maintained according to their manuals. Keep records of cleaning, inspections and repairs, and follow the manual's cleaning guidance to avoid problems with a claim.
